Rover 75

Been offered a low mileage Rover 75 diesel estate at a price too good to turn down. Been on the look out for an estate car on and off for a while.
Rovers have never really been my thing, anything I need to look out for on this car?
Will the fact it's an auto cause any problems?

if its been offered at a very good price to turn down then would need to know the reason why its 'so chep'
interestingly these cars have airconditioning problems so try it before you buy it
most of them are chipped so see if this has been done
be aware some parts are horrendously expensive and commonly fail like rear arms
personally i wouldnt barge pole one these days seeing as it could even be one of the dumped on an airstrip models for two years while the phoenix fire was laid to rest

    this from honestjohn

Some problems emerging with 5-speed autobox on diesels: clutch packs breaking up after 3-4 years.

On automatics, a piston cracks and a 3rd to 4th gear problem shows up, then gradually spreads as the bits from the damaged piston spread. Reverse goes next. and soon there is no drive at all. Reconditioned JATCO 5-speed automatic transmissions £900 + VAT

Interesting that Honest John has got that info available, as I know of a company that had over a hundred of these as private hire that then used them as Ambulance Cars in the other part of the company.

They then sold some of them to a smaller private ambulance firm, they have all done well over 200k with only odd tyre wear on the rear that has been a recurrent issue.

I reckon that they are a good bet, the gearbox is reliable in hard private hire use so should be OK in normal day to day useage.

I would have it any day of the week, so long as it drives well and the autobox works OK.

Though I would get the autobox fluid and filter changed asap.

If it is cheap then a Rover 75 auto diesel is a better bet than a Mondeo MK3 estate for the same money, and forum members will be well aware of my bias towards the Mondeo mk3.
  • agree with big above. rovers tend to wear out tyres out alot quicker when the cambers are off, ive had a few rovers, when i changed a spring i'd go through a good tyre within 3 months so i always had the cambers/tracking done and wear was normal there after.

dont be put off by the gearbox. peugeot boxes go more than the rovers do.

wish i held out for one of these now seen a MG ZT deisel estate on an 03 £2495 1 owner car with 67k just wasnt one around when i was on the hunt.

It's an 05 plate with 17k on the clock, owned by an old boy who's giving up driving. He's had it from new and been serviced every year lately by a good independant garage. With 11 months tax and ticket, it's a good spec car with leather, seems to drive ok so I think I'll give him the grand he's asking for it.
