  • I had no money-off or extra points vouchers at all with my quarterly mailing today, just some vouchers for deals with external retailers which are no good to me ...

Got mine today, spot on ! Money off bacon, tomatoes and tomato sauce, and £1.50 off Fairy Dishwasher tablets. They were half price anyway, so got them for £3.50 ! Plus their vouchers are now worth 4x if you use them for restaurant meals. Thats an absolute bargain, £10 gives you £40 of vouchers at Cafe Rouge, Pizza Express, Bella Italia, Ask and some others i can't remember.

I had exactly the same - no money off in-store products, but rather things like free entry to some theme park I'll never go to. None of the 6 were relevant to me.

I wonder if it is because I am not a big shopper at Tesco? I only go there once a month or sometimes less, just as a change from Sainsbury's (especially now they've stopped double points)

Tesco has decided your shopping patterns are stuck in a rut and is encouraging you to try new things ;)

I used to a bigger shop at Tesco on certain weeks of the month due to where it was on my regular journeys and the billing date of my Tesco credit card. I used to get vouchers at the till trying to get me to do a big shop close to the beginning of the month. The sneakiness made me laugh.

Me three :) I only go into the Tesco near work if I realise I've run out of something and need/want it that night. Or if I've got a useful voucher. I've stuck the Cafe Rouge one in my wallet just in case - but I won't be making a specific trip to eat there.

At a guess, if they've changed the algorithm for allocating vouchers maybe it now works better for regular users (hence Azari got a better selection than before) but ignores/can't calculate for infrequent users.
I need to think of something new here...

    They've certainly changed something.

The weirdest one was the sausages.

If a customer always buys 'finest' (on which it is known that they make the most profit), what on earth is the point of trying to persuade them to buy some (any) cheaper and less profitable type and specifically exclude the most profitable?

And giving a cereal voucher to someone who never buys cereal - and picking the particular cereal that is very much an 'acquired taste' - also seems odd.

It almost looked as if their motivation was: "Give him some coupons so he doesn't feel left out but make sure that he's unlikley to spend any".

  • Two choices here. Stop using club cards - no tracking then of purchases available to them, or try the other products. I too get the dopey vouchers and have for years, but recently 5/6 were for things I did on occasion buy, so for me they are getting slightly better. But this seems to have happened since I started buying on line groceries instead! Should not make any difference, but it may have?

Except that now they seem to have tailored the vouchers to things I actually want.

To put this in perspective, though, the vouchers are worth £2:05 in cash and points.

However, at the start of the year I had had two £7 on a £50 spend vouchers and thereafter - along with everyone else - get a £5 voucher each week.

So the custom vouchers are not really a big deal - although, of course, every little helps.

The idea of vouchers is to encourage you to spend more, and try different things, if they just gave you vouchers for stuff that you were guaranteed to buy then that would make no marketing sense. If you only occasionally bought finest sausages then a voucher may persuade you to make an additional purchase.

PS Don't buy Tesco finest sausages but usually the Sainsbury's equivalent.
