As a cake maker / seller myself I wouldnt do it, despite my kitchen being registered etc.

I've seen someone selling scones at a car boot which were nicely wrapped but they were sweating under the sellophane as the moisture drew out of them in the sun. They didnt look appetising.

there are more and more stalls at my local car boot selling homemade cakes. They must do well as they are back every week. I did buy one for my toddler as she was asking, it was 10p. Little fairy cake with icing and smarties on top. She loves cakes but took one bite and threw it on the floor in disgust. Must not be as good as they looked.
    Happy days

There are some charities which wont do cake stalls anymore due to the regulations.

It only takes on visit from a food inspector and if you're not registered and complying you can land yourself in a whole load of trouble.

Depends where you live and what is the norm,I live in Birmingham and at the city centre car boot i see lots of people selling cakes. But then again, there seems to be no law in Brum :( The security, patrol the car boot sale looking for much bigger fish than home baked cakes.

Public health inspection is national not local. They may be getting away with it for now but it doesnt mean they arent breaking the law. It's not security who will prosecute them, it's enviromental health.
  • As well as a Food Hygiene Certificate, wouldn't you also need Public Liability Insurance? I would have thought you would HAVE to have it.

Yes you are absolutely correct and it's not cheap either. I opted for cover for cold foods only, to save a bit of cash.

Lots of people selling home baked stuff at the car boot sale I was at in North Yorkshire this morning. Didn't need to buy anything though as my Mum is great at making cakes!

ooh i had no idea how much interest this post would generate or the advice given! :)

thanks to all those that have commented. sorry cant remember the name but the person that mentioned all the dust generated during the car boot, i'd have never realised that before today (had our first car boot) so yeah i can see why thats a yucky!

maybe in the future we could consider selling cakes etc with the right checks, insurance and car boot organisers permission.....wel'll see.

anyways we made just over £100 today so that cant be a bad thing, still got stuff to sell but for our first attempt aint bad! :)
