Orange Credit checks

Does anyone know how long it takes orange to do a credit check when ordering via their website? Will I know by the end of the application or is it a case of having to wait a period after applying, say 24/48hrs?

I have heard that orange is one of the easiest to get a contract with compared to the others. But of course that does not mean 100% success. However, I am currently with Orange on a Sim Only 30 day rolling contract, which I pay on time and indeed go over my £20 plan monthly. Will this assist in my 24 month contract application do you think?

Many thanks for any help given to my 2 questions.

I would ring them up, rather than do it online, you're most likely to get declined if you have a poor credit history.

A year ago my credit history was awful, literally couldn't get any sort of credit for anything, anyway at this point I had a PAYG Orange mobile that I have used for about 4 months, put about £10 a month on. Applied online through them for a contract, failed. Rang up about that 'Phone Credit' thing you get when you top up, and they offered me a contract with a Blackberry phone.

Thank you, ringing them may be the better option as I can discuss that I have been with them on PAYG for many years before switching to the 30 day rolling contract last year (I think). During which i always paid (on time, in the case of the 30 day rolling contract) £30 approx a month. And obviously I passed that credit check, all be it I am guessing due to the way the sim only 30 day contract works may be a lower "bar" to reach with regards checks.

The website will let you know if you've been successful once you've entered all your details, if you've been successful you'll be asked to choose a delivery window and they'll send you a confirmation email. The website will never auto-decline you, any decisions will always be referred to a team for further checks

You are asked to choose a delivery date prior to entering personal details such as address, bank details and so on. So the system will auto-accept you but not auto-decline? Did I read that right? If so I am guessing if unsuccessful I will be told something like "Your application has been referred to our team for further checks"

Thought I would give an update and the response from Orange which may help others in the same situation.

I rang up Orange yesterday to ask about upgrading from a 30 day rolling contract to a 24 month contract. Was asked to confirm my details and was then asked which phone and plan I wanted. She checked the phone was in stock, and then told me the phone would arrive on Monday. In all I was on the phone for well under 10 mins, no mention of credit checks, it literally was the questions already mentioned, of what phone and plan I wanted.

So if you are in the same boat phone up and there is no need to get worried about credit checks and the chance they will turn you down. Obviously this only applies if you have been paying your bill for your sim only plan on time :)

As of Monday I will have a Blackberry Torch, a quick phone call to switch my number to my new sim and it will be up and running.

You didn't have a credit check done as you're already a pay monthly customer.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

That is totally correct. I could of done with your post while I was still worrying if I would get accepted or not :)

But yes it does seem obvious now but at the time and from what I found online that fact is not made so clear.

  • They may have credit checked you without your knowledge. They are paid on commission I assume.

Doubt it, I really was on the phone for about 6 mins, most of that was on setting up a DD. Within the first 1 min of phoning I had already been told it would not be a problem.

Since found out that if you are a Sim Only Plan with Orange you can easily swap to a full contract without any checks as long as you have paid 3 months in full and on time.

they dont credit check existing customers, unless you want over 3 connections
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
