  • Quick question (I know it'll be around here somewhere but I haven't been able to find it):

To which address do I need to send my Smile bank charges reclaiming letter?

(I already have my statements I just need to send off my letter asking for the money back).

    Many thanks.
  • Can anyone help?

    Hi Craig,

I don't know for sure which one you need, but I've found (via google) an address which is:

    Smile
    Co-operative Bank
    1 Balloon Street
    Manchester
    M60 4EP

Also, you can go to their web site here and if you go to the "by post" part toward the bottom of the page you'll see a Nottingham address there.

    All the best Craig.

    Hello all,
I have just received the first letter back from Co-op bank (Smile) and they listed the charges and reclaims with a total at the end. I think this may be a simple question but im confused as to what i can and cant claim for.
    The Totals are
    Commission - £584.00
    Commission Refund - £225.00
    Credit Interest - £19.51
    Debit interest - £289.41
    DR INT REF?? - £7.80
    Fees - £10.00
Which one of these can i claim for if any. what does commission and DR INT Ref mean?
HSBC were really simple they just simply said how much i could claim for!

Thank you for all your help.

DR INT REF is a refund of debit interest or an adjustment that's been applied to the account at some point. Have you called them to see what the commission is? That's probably the easiest thing to do. (I really can't understand why people don't just speak to their bank for advice on this kind of thing!!)

  • the_insider: the reason they don't ring the bank is cos unfortunately, you may get two entirely different responses to the same question depending on who you talk to ;)

Same is true with two letters though, wouldn't you say?

In writing you might get two answers but the FOS would certainly rule in the customers favour based on inconsistancies ;)

  • Complained to Smile about 3 weeks ago about unfair bank charges over the past 6 years. Used the template letters on here, argument partially to do with them not reflecting actual costs they incur and also I have had a big reduction in my employment income recently which has been causing problems.

Got a stock letter today rejecting me outright and not even attempting to address the points I raised. Will take it to the FOS as the next step and told them as much today.
  • Update on my complaint with Smile - it appears to have turned rather nasty. Since complaining I have had my current account closed without any warning at all and I was locked out of smile online banking. Staff have been unable to explain the exact reason for this. No correspondence, emails or anything.

I was about £150 overdrawn in an £1,300 authorised overdraft facility which now no longer exists and they have now got their Collections Dept on me. Yesterday after a fraught conversation I paid the £50 off by debit card on the phone and said the rest would be paid on pay day later in the month. They unlocked online banking and said it would stay unlocked so long as I stuck to this agreement. Today I am locked out again and nobody from Collections is around to talk to.

I can't begin to tell you how their action has caused problems from me. I feel I should complain to the ASA about them calling themselves an "ethical" bank as they are nothing of the sort!!

My complaint to the FOS will now be a lot longer and far more interesting.
