    Avira free is one option

    http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus

Whichever one you install, update it and run a full scan, if clear, have you run windows update yet?

That will offer you the latest version of Internet Explorer, if you do not get on with it, you can download another version

You could also look at Firefox or Palemoon

IE9 should be fine to use

Before recommending an antivirus, id recommend posting a hijack script first so we can determine the best course of action (You really shouldnt be using a windows based computer without one)
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

IE9 is Windows 7 or above need to know the operating system to be certain which ones work and which ones don't. And of course if it is W7 64 bit then you cannot use IE9 as the default and IE 8 cannot be used at all the default loaded with W7 64bit is Chrome.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

IE 9 runs on any version of windows from vista onwards, both 32 and 64 bit versions.

    included IE versions
    Windows xp : IE6
    Vista : IE7
    Win 7 : IE8

Go to Windows Updates and get your computer up to date. That will install the most recent version of IE along with all the fixes Microsoft deems to be needed.

    Are you joking?

It's safe to assume that the OP is using Windows XP, therefore the highest version of Internet Explorer available to them will be Internet Explorer 8. It should be available through Windows Update as an Important or Recommended update.

Wrong look it up or get a version of W7 64 like I have and try it and you will get a message saying IE9 is not allowed to be the default MS have decided this is the way it will be.

The included version on my new W7 is IE9
