Ditch Internet explorer all together as all versions are plagued with errors and needing patching with updates to often.

As some have said here go for one of the others firefox being one of the best.

There are so many alternative options out now one wonders why so many people still chose to use I.E knowong that they are not bug free.

Wrong look it up or get a version of W7 64 like I have and try it and you will get a message saying IE9 is not allowed to be the default MS have decided this is the way it will be.

The included version on my new W7 is IE9

Then you have a very nice hacked version of Win7

Microsoft never updates the default browser with later builds of windows. I have an MSDN subscription courtesy of my employer I can download the lastest build and it will just have IE8 on it.
Even the latest XP build still starts with IE 6, the build of winxp that comes with win7 is still IE6.

There are slipstreamed version avaliable but these are not offical releases from microsoft

I can happily run Win7 64bit, with IE9 as my default browser

IE9 should be fine to use

Before recommending an antivirus, id recommend posting a hijack script first so we can determine the best course of action (You really shouldnt be using a windows based computer without one)
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

An odd conclusion to draw when all browsers are regularly updated in response to security vulnerabilities.

You should be using the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer.

Yes Lucy follow GJ's advice, ignore the rest of the chatter, then hopefully (not realistic though) the "I know better than you brigade" will leave your thread alone

Edit: But of course you need IE to use windows update ..... but 6 is fine for this for now.

Yes indeed many are updated to newer versions because features have been added, however they do not get the threats that I.E get and are also not open to hacking like I.E is.

Also it may be worth using MSE (or avast or avira) for a day or two from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security_essentials/default.aspx
