Am I going a little gaga? Or do some people think unless you get a motability car AND mobility allowance, the car is not free?
Have the car OR the mobility allowance, free, for nothing, gratis.
How does it cost anything? (Excepting for adaptions and upgrades.)
Yes, I do think you are a little gaga, on several different levels. However, a Motability car is not free. A DLA claimant's allowance is reduced by the relevant amount, therefore it is not free. For example, if the claimant is entitled to higher rate mobility component, they would be getting £205 every four weeks. As you know, this is paid directly to Motability, if you have one of their cars; it is therefore costing the recipient £205 every four weeks.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
thanks for the replys
the vehicle is a VW t5 CARAVELLE the vehicle we had before( not on motability) was also a vw a t4 caravelle( that was 100% reliable. lol) but due to my wife health she needed an automatic.
so we decided to get a T5 caravelle it was, I think £33-34k to buy if it was not on contract hire ( motability) plan was to put the advance payment down have it on motability for 3 years then buy it Had there not been the option to buy it there is no way we would have put a £10K advance payment down) .
So.......... spoken with motability
Who have said yes you can end your agreement early but you'll only get £5K back
if you want a replacement vehicle you'll have to end your agreement early and put another £10K deposit down. ( £5k from the refund & £5k of our own money)
Well, given that you have have had 18 months of use of the vehicle, which is half of the lease, It seems to make sense that you would get back half of the advance payment.
Then if you put in another £5k, you get a brand new vehicle all over again.
The answer from motability seems quite fair. Of course, you wouldn't have to find another £5k if the vehicle had been more reliable.
Sooo, now it's time to contact VW Customer care manager. Unless your vehicle has covered an unusually high mileage for it's (young) age, you should be able to expect better reliability than that. VW may be able to offer you a goodwill gesture in the light of these problems - perhaps a contribution towards your advance payment on the next vehicle.
I would make a detailed list of the problems you have endured with the vehicle, and open negotiations with them now.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
BIRKEE....".If I get a new car within the next few weeks, then the car is paid for by my mobility allowance, and THAT is free, so the car is a free replacement for it. It costs ME nothing."
It is not free is it?,you are giving up your mobility allowance which if in receipt of it you are legally entitled to..henceforth you forfeit the money and get the car.........so it follows that you are paying for it!!
If i forfeit my war pension mobility for a motability car then i am paying for it,my money is awarded for injuries received during my time in the forces so therefore i would be insulted if you told me i was getting a free car when in fact i get the allowance for my injuries ..same applies to DLA mobility..you are awarded it to help you with your getting around,it follows that you do not choose to be disabled and being so restricts your daily living..so it is not free is it? you are experiencing disadvantages in society along with pain, loss of movement etc..hardly free then!!!by calling it free in my opinion does no favours for the wider disabled population who are in the position of needing this benefit to aid their mobility and care needs which can prove to be life changing in many instances and be the difference between having some kind of life or merely an existence.Loyal to those deserving!!.0 -
Ive had one motability car and I payed over £3k down and that was over four years ago, every other car I have bought myself.
I did buy a faulty Merc a few years ago and I got a full refund on it because it was built badly, talk to trading standards and they will talk you through rejecting the car but 18 months is a long time to keep a "bad" car, I rejected mine at 10 months but most of theat 10 months I had a hire car as an old g it reversed into me while I was stationary.0 -
some good info here chaps thanks again
the car has only just covered under 10K Miles in one and a half years0 -

My Merc had under 2k miles on the clock because i was scared of driving it, that backed me up when I rejected it because no one would drive a faulty car if they believed they were in danger and that car was dangerous.0 -

You get your war pension, because you were put in a position by your country to suffer injuries. We OWE you compensation.
And whilst mentioning that, please accept our thanks for your service, and sympathy for injuries suffered.

Re the above. I get a mobility allowance for no reason at all except I'm disabled. Therefore it is free. To replace that free money with a free car, in effect, makes that car free instead.
If the taxpayers can no longer afford to pay mobility allowance because times are hard, have they robbed you of anything? It's not their fault some people have disabilities.
They were giving students an allowance to encourage them to stay on in education, now thing are hard, they want to stop paying.
Your logic is, the students are being robbed of money they were entitled to.
If you don't take your Wife on holiday this year, because times are hard, does she divorce you for mistreatment and removal of her rights?
If you give your postman a tip this week, will he complain of being robbed when you don't give it to him every week?
Personally, I say "thank you very much, that's very kind of you!" for my mobility allowance. It's not been exchanged for a car in my case because I've only done 11,500 miles in just over 6 years.
If they stop my mobility allowance tomorrow, I shall be no worse off financially than I would have been if it had never existed in the first place.0 -

In which case, you are in a unique position. Because I can guarantee you that the vast majority of DLA and high mobility component recipients do not see it like that at all.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Having owned a brand new VW passat, 2 head gaskets in 40,000 miles plus new ecu + total gearbox failure, I am not the slightest surprised, in the end I parked it up until the finance was paid and got a Mondeo, which is about to roll over 100.k with no problems.
Anyway, how on earth can they expect anyone to drive that car now, its a death trap.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
