One issue to maybe consider with the Clydesdale / Yorkshire Bank's Debit Mastercard is that it is credit scored. They will give anyone a Maestro card but for some reason not the Mastercard. Also, it is not available of their basic bank account, at the moment at least.

I noticed doing a search on Google for Debit Mastercard that the Thinkbanking card is now one, and that is not credit scored but is subject to a fairly hefty monthly charge and I am unsure what you really get for your money. So it could be hoped that CB/YB will in future allow them to be issued to all customers.

Are you 100% sure on that? I am with Clydesdale Bank and I have a cheque guarantee facility (until the end of the month!) and an overdraft. When my multi-function Maestro card ran out last year I was expecting to get a debit Mastercard but instead got another Maestro. I am not saying you are wrong but my account must have been credit checked at some point. I know there were issues with debit Mastercard acceptance last year and they may have gone back to Maestro for a short while. It is the case that the basic account only comes with Maestro, but that is an 'always authorise' one.

Hi Kev, I think this must be an issue with the insurance company you were buying from.
I have a Maestro card from Yorkshire bank and purchased home insurance yesterday - went through with no problems !!

I was told by a local branch that if I applied for a full current account I was not guaranteed a debit Mastercard, I would definitely be allowed a Maestro card however. They said it was "credit scored" and that the computer determined which card I was eligible for.

I think that may be because the basic account which everyone (or nearly everyone) can get comes with a Maestro?

Just a quick response to the comment on Think Banking - it's not a hefty fee - it's £12 a month...

Think Banking. For people who don't.

    **BUMP**

Sorry to bump up this old thread but over the last weeks I've had two merchants refuse to take Maestro.

One was Virgin Trains who said they only take Visa & Mastercard and the other was Co-op Electrical Shop online, who again would only take Visa or Mastercard.

I'm not sure if Cyldesdale's Mastercard Debit is credit scored. Wouldn't surprise me if it were. Anecdotally when I go into the Clydesdale the only people I ever see clutching the Debit Mastercard in the queue look over 50.

I do business banking for my employer there so I'm in a lot and I've never seen anyone young looking with one.

It's all a bit annoying though. I kinda expect my debit card to accepted everywhere and it's almost embarrassing for it not to be.
  • I had issues with Maestro acceptance and asked Yorkshire Bank to change my card to Mastercard (see my other thread). They sent a form for me to complete and I returned it, I now have one. I don't have the most amazing credit history but there were no problems in getting the debit card changed, though all in all it did take almost a month!
    Sorted out my finances...

so to re bump this thread but when i spoke to Yorkshire bank about changing my card form maestro to a more accepted one they refused without giving a reason, this is really annoying due to the fact this is my only card, my wages are paid into to id prefer not to have to switch banks, as are my direct debits i.e mobile contracts.

i have an android mobile and google refuses my type of card, as does ebay without going through paypal (whom i dislike, the whole paying to get your own money back into your own bank thing)

also found out my local pub no longer accepts my style card either on their machines

    :T well done yorkshire bank

You could phone them and ask if they can tell you why you can't get a Mastercard, but apart from that the only thing to do is switch banks really. Vote with your feet - if Yorkshire Bank can't provide you with the service you need then they don't deserve your custom.

Well, my Clydesdale Bank Maestro card is about to expire and my new card arrived yesterday. I was expecting a debit Mastercard but it is another Maestro - but oddly it is only valid for nine months - running out at the end of the year
