maestro no longer accepted?

Options
not sure if everyone knows this.
tried to buy insurance online today, got to point of paying and pop up came up stating maestro no longer accepted.
thought it was odd so phoned the insurance company who confirmed they no longer accepted this payment and said most other online companies were starting to refuse it.

phoned the bank (yorkshire) who seemed oblivious to this and told me that everyone still accepted it?...told her i googled it and it seems most are not accepting it.

her answer was to get another card.
anyone else having problems with maestro?

I'm fairly sure Maestro is being phased out ? Why Yorkshire bank still issue these cards to customers i don't know, I'd of thought they would issue there 'Debit Mastercards' To everyone now ?

My account with Northern Bank has a Maestro card. I had a new one issue last month. Valid until August 2014

If the merchant does not use MasterCard SecureCode, then they cannot accept Maestro cards online - This is due to the card rules set by MasterCard for Maestro cards.

All face to face transactions also now have to be completed by the Chip - if this fails, they are not allowed to do a manual input for example.

Maestro is not being phased out, but all the other banks have moved to Visa Debit because it has better acceptance globally and also you get your money back if the company goes bust. (Chargeback protection). It is true that there is this issue about MasterCard insisting online retailers support securecode for Maestro and this means some retailers won't accept it because they don't want to set it all up. One solution could be that Yorkshire / Clydesdale also issue Debit MasterCard which is more like Visa Debit in terms of coverage and protection. i would demand one of those.

For the first time ever with Maestro Cards, Chargeback protection is coming at the end of the year but it took them long enough!

One issue to maybe consider with the Clydesdale / Yorkshire Bank's Debit Mastercard is that it is credit scored. They will give anyone a Maestro card but for some reason not the Mastercard. Also, it is not available of their basic bank account, at the moment at least.

I noticed doing a search on Google for Debit Mastercard that the Thinkbanking card is now one, and that is not credit scored but is subject to a fairly hefty monthly charge and I am unsure what you really get for your money. So it could be hoped that CB/YB will in future allow them to be issued to all customers.
  • Just a quick response to the comment on Think Banking - it's not a hefty fee - it's £12 a month and has the advantage of never receiving any bank charges for being over limit, two accounts so that all your direct debit payments etc money is held for you and you can't overspend. Plus all their telephone operators are in the UK and are very helpful. I reccommend the account to everyone as it's been like a ray of sunshine after years of wrestling with Abbey National and facing copious bank charges very month, usually incurred by going over my limit because charges from teh previous month were imposed! And no help whatsoever offered to avoid the situation and that "tone" from their oeprators that you must be a "bad" person in some way to face this situation... Re Maestro, yes it is now Visa debit... Never had any issues...

Personally I thing £12 monthly is a hefty fee for an account that is free from most other organisations. And I believe they charge a premium rate phone call to call them. As you have no way of spending more than you have the reference to no charges is rather strange. No banks charge unless you spend more than you have.

£12 a month is a good investment if you can't manage your own money and avoid getting charged by the bank. If you can stay within the terms and conditions for the account that you signed up for and avoid charges, then its a daylight robbery.

I would only ever suggest Think Banking to someone who is so utterly hopeless with money that they would receive their pay, spunk the whole lot up the wall, bounce all their Direct Debits and then blame the bank for the whole situation.

Even then £12 is a bit steep.
