Had my cat PTS :(

I think the hardest thing to deal with is knowing that she was fine last week, but then became ill quite suddenly. She wasn't eating or drinking much, was losing weight, had trouble going to the toilet (number 2's), & was listless & weak. She was also purring very loud, which I think was probably because she was in pain/anxious/stressed. Yesterday, she got into her litter box & just laid there. OH rushed her to the vets (I couldn't go), but not before I said 'goodbye' to her, kissed her & told her that I loved her (I think deep down I knew she wouldn't be coming back home). The vet gave her oxygen & said that the best thing for her would be to put her to sleep to end her suffering. As she was an outdoor cat, the vet said she could have picked something up, or ate something she shouldn't have.
I just feel so guilty. She didn't have the best of starts in life (she was abandoned by a family, so I took her on, looked after her, & showed her as much love as I possibly could), & now I feel like I've failed her & let her down. I know this may sound silly but I keep thinking about what she would have been thinking before she went to the vets, like 'where are you taking me?', 'what are you doing?', 'what have I done wrong?', etc. I can't stop crying & my heart just feels so heavy right now. I have other cats but right now all I can think about is Candy
And then there's the what ifs, 'what if I'd taken her to the vets sooner?', 'what if I'd done this or done that?', etc. It's just so sad knowing that I'll never see her again, never hear her sweet little meow, never see her rolling about in the dirt outside, relaxing in the sun.
I've lost cats in the past, but I'm finding it so much harder this time as she was put to sleep (she didn't die naturally). She was only 10 too.
Do the feelings of guilt lessen over time?
RIP Candy. I miss you & I'll always love you x

I know it's hard, but you did the right thing - if she was suffering, it's kinder to put her out of her misery. A natural death is not always best.0
