Thanks for that.According to this thread, the direct debit will be collected around 6 days before the payment due date.
So it looks like, from posts 6 & 9 in that thread...
1. Because it's a full payment DD it is indeed taken 6 days or so beforehand (minimums are collected on the actual day itself*), and
2. The statement does clearly inform you of the direct debit collection date.
Perhaps the OP has recently changed from minimum to full payment and just assumed they were the same? Whatever the reason, it looks like he relied too much on text messages and not enough on the information on the statement.
* Which is why I'd never noticed it before, as I generally only ever pay minimums by direct debit.0
