Its a bit poor if this reminder did not come in time. And you might have been able to use that to get your card co to agree not to charge you the £12 late fee had your payment bounced. But it is still your responsibility to have money in your account on the date the DD is coming out your account (and you were notified of that date on your statement) so I think you have no chances of them agreeing to pay any fees incurred from your bank or other creditors.

It's your responsibility to ensure you have enough funds to pays your DDs.
A reminder is a back up tool & can fail. It shouldn't be trusted 100%.

    Just cancel the DD.

Check your statements and pay by the due date - either by debit card on Tesco's site, or send using internet banking.

That way you stay in control - you only send the money at a time you are sure you have money available. No bounced payments flying around and additional charges. Of course if you don't pay by the due date, you'll have have late payment fees on the CC account and may get a late marker. But no implications for the current account. If a DD bounces, it can be marked on your credit file.

I find if I pay by (Nationwide) debit card on Tesco's website it goes through same day.

Basically on their website you can select what notifications you receive based on different events.
On my account i have the following enabled: I received this notification, went to my account to transfer money to find theyve taken the money already
Date added/amended Alert Delivery choice 17 Nov 2010 1 days before my payment is due Email & text

It is a reminder sent out one day before your payment is due.

Your payment is due on the 27th so the reminder was sent on the 26th which is correct.

The date your DD is collected is 5 day or so before the date that the payment is due to allow for processing time etc.

In short the reminder is not to warn you that the DD is due it is to warn you that the payment day is tomorrow ie it's your last chance to make a payment if you haven't already done so.

Is that a new thing with Tesco (and so presumably RBS/NatWest too?), because I don't remember it working like that when I had my Tesco card in 2009/10.

And I don't remember any other of my cards operating that way either, ie if the "payment due" date is the 27th, then that's also the DD collection date (unless that date falls on a weekend/Bank Holiday, in which case it's the next working day).

I made some assumptions that could well be incorrect.

The alert is definitely designed to be sent one day before the payment due date. The alert is not related to the date the DD is taken which may or may not be the same day.

The OP needs to tell us what date is quoted on his bill for the payment due date. He has told us the DD collection date was the 23rd what was the due payment date?

It's of very little use then (to anyone not paying by DD), unless the Tesco card accepts FPs and your own bank can send them...because a payment by any other means wouldn't get there in time.

I decided against a DD for this very reason. I just set up a one-off payment with my bank every month when the statement comes in for about a week before it's due. This way I know that even if there is a weekend in that time my payment will still go through on time. I also have a reminder sent by e-mail a week before it's due in case I have forgotten to set the payment up with my bank. Since doing this I've had no problems with being overdrawn.

I think having a reminder a day before it's due is a bit pointless because it's too late to make the payment on time.

According to this thread, the direct debit will be collected around 6 days before the payment due date.

So it looks like it is the difference between the direct debit date and the payment due date that caused the confusion here.
