BT home hub is it any good?
Comments
-
I've installed 8 home hubs for clients - I have to say they are a rather large unit and are basically nothing that special technically ! But they do the job of providing wireless internet. As other have mentioned these are "locked down" - so don't think you can do much with them - you can't !!. Many people I've come accross seam to think the BT adverts on television for the home hub, imply the home hub is "a revolution in voice and video technology that BT are bringing to customers" .... alas not .... the VoIP service will only work with BT's rather overpriced service and BT Video service (Vision) is not yet on general release !!
Relyability : 6 - configured fine and I understand are still working, 1 - was DOA, and then had to be replaced. another died after running for 2 weeks and had to be replaced.
The Good - the units appear to have a reasonablly powerful wireless transmitter, I would say almost as good as a Linksys WRTG range, and definatly far superior to the Netgears that Sky provide! At least the home hub will support WEP and WPA encryption for compatability with WEP only devices (where as Sky's netgear won't) !
The Bad - Technically its a poor unit, not many LAN connections for printers, though it will support USB connections, it's rather large and bulky, and of course it's extremly restrictive in what you can do with it - as it's "locked down".
Not much else to say .... not that impressive really - my money would go on a Linksys Router (either with VoIP ports or not) or combine it with a PAP2 for VoIP (if you want it!) .0 -
I have recently aquired Home Hub with a new Total Broadband contract. I also still have a Linksys WAG54G. I presume that I could use the Linksys for my broadband connection but could I still use the BTBroadband Talk phone with the Linksys? I suppose that I would need to use the Home Hub for that as it has the required software to run it.0

as afr as I'm aware you need the hub for the phone to work
ok...latest update , now online via the hub, turned off the built in firewall and the filtering but left it "as is" otherwise and I'm online ok at the moment , had to access the hub via firefox as it's not updated itelf to the latest firmware yet and I cannot use IE 7 to do it
WITHOUT INSTALLING ANY OF THE BT SOFTWARE ON MY PC ...as it seems to load so much crap including new wireless network management software for some reason
restarted the PC once already and it reconnected staright away (which it did not always do in the past)Ex forum ambassador

m4rky could you show me where you found this information on setting up the hub using windows. When i first got it i was surprised how flimsy it was in comparison to how it looked on TV. Aside from the disconnection problems i've been having it's all right.formerly mrmilo690

I was sent this a couple of weeks ago. Connected it all up, did everything I needed to do and connected... fine!
Next day spent two hours trying to read one web page, ended up with no connection, switched the damn thing on and off, rang BT, waited, tried it all again, developed high blood pressure and irrational hate of BT hub and threw it down the back of the sofa.
Re-connected the voyager via USB and haven't bothered with the stupid hub thing since.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
you do realise that you have to leave the hub on for 14 days 24/7 to get it up to speed don't you, that's if your a new customer.
