Court Summons from DVLA - Great!

Hi, I have had a similar summons today for a 'slightly' more complicated situation.
I basically sold a car to a friend of mine in April '12 and filled in the V5 form with him. I THOUGHT I sent the paperwork off but after receiving a car tax reminder for the vehicle I realised that it hadnt gone off.
Soon after, I received a letter saying that 'I failed to insure the car' by the Motor Insurance DB and I could pay a one off fine. I phoned them and the suggested writing to the DVLA explaining the situation.
I wrote them a letter saying that it was an honest mistake and a mix up between me and the buyer and gave all the details of my friend in the letter.
I received an acknowledgement letter from the DVLA (dated 22Jun) saying that they received my letter and have updated the details. Also saying 'any penalties prior to this letter, contact the issuer' (which i assumed was them?!)... So i thought this was all sorted.
I today 18th Sep got a court summons relating to the offence of 13/06/12 that I did not meet the 'insurance requirements of the vehicle' and also there is a maximum fine of £1000+ fees.
I do appreciate that this was an oversight by me but as soon as they raised something was wrong on the 13/06, I responded to that letter, took action straight away and thought that was the end of it. In hindsight, I should have called to confirm it was the end of it but after receiving the acknowledgement letter and getting a contant ENGAGED/ON HOLD when phoning the DVLA, I thought all was good.
Should I plead guilty to the offence or not guilty as I really intended to do the right thing and don't need this fine right now as I have just got married *small violin*
I have read something about 'the Interpretation act' which might help but i'm really not sure, any thoughts MUCH appreciated
