forgot to mention...on the rent side of things

i pay £80 a week for my room in halls. im self catered, just have the pleasure of my own tardis (thats shower and toilet room to everyone else!!!)

whilst it does seem expensive at first, you soon get used to paying it and forget all about it (unless you also have to pay your course fees out of your loan, in which case you would find it difficult).

on the plus side, in your second and third year, when you move out into a house with mates, you will expect to pay about £50 a week rent, and about £6 a week bills (unless you're in london/posh area, in which case start saving now!) which means you will have £20-£30 quid a week extra to play around with that you didnt have before.

from there on the possibilities are endless...thats at least an extra grand to have some fun with/invest for the future

    Hi,

I'm going to uni in September this year & have just applied for accomodation.
My rent is going to be £79 a week (which i feel is a lot for a student to pay) and this might go up again

I then had the bright idea of finding out about the other costs involved in living in halls, so i e-mailed the uni about the cost of internet connection.

Apparently the provisional cost from Sept 05 is £140 a year or £20 for 30days (this could go up) This seems like a heck of a lot to me - my sister can connect to the net for free at her halls, and when my brother was at uni, he paid a one up fee of like £80 or something :S

What are other students paying or not paying?

    Seperate rankt.

IThis whole uni business is far too expensive!!

I too disagree with them charging for you to access the net in your hall room. I have paid £150 for this at Southampton University before and they still charge this. However as you know, the internet is free for students to use at uni when they log on to uni computer. I mean charging for that would be pretty insane.

I partically take issue to the £150 charge because access is restricted, ports are blocked etc.

My advice is to see if they have a wireless internet connection in your halls, because you couild just log into that for free.

I HATE NTL, they'r money grabbing !!!!!!! Five years ago the university of Southampton had NTL install a LAN in all hall rooms throughout the university. Unfortunately they also had them install phonelines and made a huge mistake of allowing NTL to operate an internet service over the phonelines.

NTL decided to charge 1p/min internet access and told the university that they could not use the equipment LAN they installed as it would affect their profits. I have no idea what the details were, but the university was very angry and the result was that for five years the students had internet connectiosn in their rooms that they couldn't use. Instead they had the only option of paying 1p/min for a !!!!ty dialup connection. Thankfully in the fith year things changed and that just happend to be a year I was in halls. I must admit though i wasn't happy to pay the £150.

Imo NTLs behaviour was tantamount to extortion.

Yes, but if you look at the internet usage, students living in halls with access from a personal computer in their room will use an awful lot more bandwidth than people accessing the net from shared uni. comptuers. Ultimately the university has to pay for the transfer by the gigabyte, as well as providing all the extra infrastructure and connectivity in the first place, so they are quite right to charge the people that benefit from this rather than loading the cost onto the general student population.

The internet at my uni (LSBU) is free in the halls for broadband.

I have to say that if they tried to charge us any extra on top of my £80 a week rent I wouldn't be impressed. Especially as we have a lot of things blocked that we would normally use

That is pretty average halls cost, including bills. You would probably pay more in a house, for rent + bills.

The internet prices however, are very steep! At Royal Holloway its free, but I know Canterbury charges. As other people have said tho, most uni's have free computer rooms that are open 24/7 or at least during college hours. N btw if you are thinking of using the net for dling on campus, forget it.

My son pays £50 for the academic year in Student village in Manchester, he says it's a good service and I think that is reasonable.

    oo manchester student..

I pay £92 a year here at manchester university.. next year I'll be paying £75 for connection in my flat (AND IT'S GOING TO BE IDENTICAL SERVICE TO THE ONE I'M PAYING FOR THIS YEAR AS IT'S PROVIDED BY THE UNI!!) how stupid is that??? pay more in university owned halls than in private accomodation but it's exactly the same service.. pffft.

At RGU in Aberdeen you pay £67 or £75 for ensuite per week, and get 24/7 internet access included, which is taken from the Uni's own internet access.
As has been said before most uni's allow 24/7 internet access in computer rooms, but don't allow downloading or access to certain sites.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

When I was in my first year i was in Halls at Portsmouth (best uni in the world IMHO ;) ) a dial up connection in my halls was free... with broadband costing £3-5 per week depending how whizzy you needed it...

I currently am in a flat and we are with BT's student broadband package *extortionate but we can't get anything cheaper in this house cos of the location* and the broadband worked out cheaper than a dial up connection

    be good y'all
