Internet costs at Uni.

Options
Hi,

I'm going to uni in September this year & have just applied for accomodation.
My rent is going to be £79 a week (which i feel is a lot for a student to pay) and this might go up again :(

I then had the bright idea of finding out about the other costs involved in living in halls, so i e-mailed the uni about the cost of internet connection.

Apparently the provisional cost from Sept 05 is £140 a year or £20 for 30days (this could go up) This seems like a heck of a lot to me - my sister can connect to the net for free at her halls, and when my brother was at uni, he paid a one up fee of like £80 or something :S

What are other students paying or not paying?

This whole uni business is far too expensive!!

I pay £60 a year at York, but we have 24 hour internet access from the computer rooms for free which some people use.

£20/term here, but our terms are only 8 weeks long.

if you don't want to pay for internet connection in your halls all unis have free internet access in libraries or computer rooms, it's just less convenient.

£140 is fairly expensive, and as others have said there is free internet access on campus. However its worth remembering that you will connect diretcly into the SuperJANET network (probably - most unis are)

Its incredibly fast, faster than most broadbands which are available.

The cost may also include the necessary cards and the like to do it.

ohyeah, i forgot you have to pay to lease a network card as well if you don't have one. I'm not sure how much that is as i already had one.

My son pays £50 for the academic year in Student village in Manchester, he says it's a good service and I think that is reasonable.

  • Get a few mates together in your halls and chip in on one internet connection then buy 1 wireless router, and a few wireless network adapters plug them into your computers/laptops so you all have access, this will only work if your all in the same flat/house. Well worth doing if you work out how much you all end up paying!

This would work in a flat/house but halls wouldn't have the required BT/cable phone line.

ResNet service is £55/year here in Bristol.

There's no point paying to lease a network card, most desktops and laptops made within the last few years have one built in anyway; if yours doesn't then a network card for a desktop PC can easily be bought for less than £10.

  • The wireless router will work with the connection which you connect your computer to the wall without a problem as I speak from experience.

at my uni we have free broadband internet access from pcs in the libraries/study halls etc between the houes of 8.30-22.00

if you have a laptop with a wireless internet card, you can get free broadbandnet access anywhere on campus or in halls via the wap hotspots.

failing that, in our rooms in halls, we have a dial up service provided by ntl where connection costs 3p, and surfing costs 1p per minute there after...mine refuses to work, but thats another story!

  • I pay £215 a year (10 months!) with Ubroadband.

Even then they had 2 months downtime YES 2 months!! only started working near christmas!!! Even then i had a 24 hour downtime last week!!

Guess what they gave us, £30!! as a goodwill gesture.

Its disgusting what these huge companies do.

Its Unite accomodation, the broadband service is called ubroadband. https://www.ubroadband.net

You are forced to go with them, or not have an internet connection!! They dont want to cough up the compensation it was me after £40 worth of phone calles to them on my mobile :( (they disconnected all teh phones here, to put in broadband!!) they wanted to give £20 compensation but i got it raised to 30, after i threatened to take them to court.

Never have i been so mad in my life!! :( Plus there is 500 people in this block, thats a lot without internet access! if they brought it.
