Sounds like someone lost a pole for their awning, buy yours, send it back minus what they need, E.bay is so stacked at present for scammers that dishonesty can be used to just about obtain anything you desire and you can not even leave bad feedback to warn others.
E.bay is out of control and riding roughshod over peoples rights, it is as said a Scamers paradise.

Of course the P&P comes out of the sellers pocket as the seller would have to refund the original P&P as well meaning they are out of pocket the price it cost to send it and probably the cost of returning it as well.

Only in the case of a refund though surely?
in a normal trouble free sale the item would be sold at £30 with the buyer paying £10 for p&p.
Seller receives £40 posts the item and has £30 in hand, the items selling price.

The £10 p&p charge has been paid by the buyer, yes?
Or am I getting even more tied in knots?

You are correct that the selller has £30 in his hands, but if he refunds he refunds the full amount , ie £40.
