This thread has brought-back some memories.
First car - Renault 14 TL, this had an engine tilted back to 60 deg. and would easily leave Escort RS Cosworths standing at the traffic lights.
Sold that and bought a Mitsubisji Colt Galant 1.6GL. Drove really well.
Next up was a Toyota Celica 2.0 GT Lift-back reg no. A70RES. It went like stink.
Then came a VW Beetle 1200 in sky blue. Reg no. RPV525J, and sharing the drive space was a Mazda B1800 pick-up with column change. This took me and my oh all the way to Scotland. It got a stone through the radiator 12 miles outside Carlisle and we got towed to a garage where they brazed-up the two broken cores. Never did change the radiator. Kept the Mazda for another 2 years then sold it. Found it again in a scrap yard 5 years later.
Then came a Mk4 Cortina (free from F-in-L), Montego, Citreon BX (money pit of a car, but handled well), Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 estate, Transit tipper, Vauhall Cavalier 1.6 (used to get 60 mpg out of it) and last of the 1980's cars, VW Passat (bought it the night before going on holiday, then had to get my dad to take me in to town to swap the insurance over so I could drive it to Hunstanton.
As for more 'modern' cars, Ford Siera Saphire (rust-bucket), Citreon Xantia 1.7 TD( 4 years of trouble-free motoring, then the clutch started to slip), Renault Espace 2.2TDC (killed by cambelt failure due to previous owners stupidly trusting the dealership to change it), LPG-powered LDV Convoy Hi-Top LWB with V8 engine, Diesel Convoy Hi-top LWB (still own), Vauxhall Astra 1.6 TDI and Ford Focus.
Add to this 1 Suzuki DTR125 and it's replacement, a brand new Kawasaki AR125 and that is a lot of metal.Never Knowingly Understood.

I think you have a bit of rose tinted syndrome there mate. The 14TL was the entry level version wasn't it?
My mum had the top spec 14TS, that had the 1360cc engine , from memory but would just about keep up with an XR3, but the XR3i and RS1600i would leave it behind after 50mph.
Though the 14 was very underrated, my mums was full of rust when ahe sold it at 4 yrs old, she traded ir for a Renault 5 Event which was a spwcial edition based on the Renault 5 TR with the 1237cc engine and very high geared 5th gear. I crashed that one big style, my only really serious RTC. And she replaced it with a 19 GTS. I think that had a similar engine to the 14TS, there where two 1.4 engines, a 1397cc and a more powerful 1360cc.
I just can't remember if the 1360cc engine was fitted to the 14TS, i do remember that the TS had twin choke carbs though. And really comfy front seats.0 -
I will never forget my first car. It was a Ford Pubic.
It was made up of old Corsairs.0 -
I wonder how many readers of this thread have been tempted to, "fire up the Quattro?" :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

I must admit to looking at the for sale section on Retro Rides.
But have so far managed to resist the temptation of eBay.
Have you managed to avoid bidding yet mikey720
