I just play games on my PC, thus saving me hundreds on the cost of a console, and due to no Sony/MS etc licensing agreements games can be sold much cheaper too.

I love PC games - but to stay current you seem to need a new graphics card every year that's twice the price of a console....and more and more games seem to be coming late to PC, if at all.
  • I think the price is reasonable, when you take into account what's included. The new wave controllers aren't cheap!!

I see no issue with an overclocked gamecube - gamecube was great lol :D

Well not that often but best every 18-24 months. If you're shrewd though and sell your existing machine at the right time, the upgrade won't cost you more than £200.

Console's on the outset are cheaper, but looking at my 360, I bought the wireless adapter, charge kits, a few games, another controller. It all adds up. The main plus with pc's for me is the multiplayer is far better. I've been able to play 64 players FPS maps since Battlefield Vietnam, around 2-3 years ago. You're usually lucky if you get 8 or 16 with a console.

  • I love the fan boys that jump on the 'next gen war' bandwagon. Its concocted by the media to make you a) Buy their magazines and b) make you buy their consoles when they come out. Then, they make you argue like this "No, my playstation is better than your Wii, my dads 'arder than yours" and it gets ridiculous. People get out of games consoles what they want. It doesnt always pay to be a loyalist, but believing the hype before something is proven is a pretty tragic way to approach something with an open mind.

I personally am gonna buy the PS3. I've been looking forward to it coming out for some time now and am following its progress state-side/Orient-side closely. I'm not tragic enough to buy one before their released (although from a money saving point of view this could be a better option, unless it breaks and stuck with a useless warranty of course!) but I certainly dont slag off one console over the other, especially without playing it.

I'm sure each will have its own strengths over the others, the Nintendo looks cool and chic and offers fun on greater interactive levels (although Mario Brothers being an 'in-depth' game over say G.O.W is just one example of the opinion of some of the jaded fanboys out there!), the 360 is established already, but lets not forget it started off with many problems which have been mostly patched, the launch games there werent particulary awe inspiring, and the real 'next gen' games have only just been released into the mainstream, as its aware the competition is biting at its heels. Plus, the cost of a 360 new, with the HD-DVD add on comes to over £400 so why people compare it to the PS3 as being a great deal 'cheaper' also shows a lack of knowledge about their subject of choice! As regards to Sony, they have messed the consumer around for too long now, their developers are getting fed up not being able to sufficiently test the hardware to make better games, and as such they are losing licences to X-Box (there is a chance MGS4 will be a multi-platform release)

Once all consoles have been released for over a year each, then we will be able to see what each is capable of as a standalone console, and not before! I'll probably upset a few people who take exception to the fact that they are indeed uneducated and loyalist to a brand, but i'm really sitting on the fence and will judge each on its merit. I'm not getting suckered into the 'console wars' debates, and will make my own mind up for myself!:D

I don't think anyone on this thread has been "suckered into" a console war, just offering opinions on what's out there as requested by the OP. Branding people uneducated because they have a preference for a certain manufacturers goods is not particularly clever - when two items are similarly specced there's nothing wrong with looking at the manufacturers history (eg reliability, treatment of customers etc) before making up your mind.

I've tried all three new systems, own two, and much prefer one (the 360) myself, for the reasons laid down in my original post. Nothing wrong with the PS3 (well, actually there are a few things plain broken at the moment, but they'll probably be fixed by the time the console is released here in March) - it'll be a great system and doubtless sell loads. The 360 just fits my needs better.

I certainly am - it cost me less than the UK version will, I've had chance to check it out and satisfy my curiousity, and will shortly sell it on ebay for a reasonable profit....it's fun to be tragic sometimes!

I wouldn't have said many problems. The main one was that batches were failing, but that's always going to get bad press. They did ship a couple of million so you're bound to get a 2-5% failure rate.

The main bugs I find, aren't necessarily bugs, more weaknesses. For me the noise of the DVD-ROM is one. The costly wifi adapter another. And the lack of being able to run homebrew (you basically need XP Media Center Edition).

I would agree the 360 release games weren't exactly great, but the PS3 can't say much either. Both have been released with very average games. For me the Wii has done the best with regards to release games.
Plus, the cost of a 360 new, with the HD-DVD add on comes to over £400 so why people compare it to the PS3 as being a great deal 'cheaper' also shows a lack of knowledge about their subject of choice!

Let's not forget the PS3 hasn't been released yet. I'm sure Microsoft will drop the price slightly when it is. Also the Xbox 360 plus HD-DVD may be around the price of a PS3, but only people that need it will buy it. I for one won't be buying it yet, and not for a long time, so the 360 works out much cheaper.

True, but the OP may want to buy before then. Often you have to predict which will work out best.

For me it's all about the games, and being able to run homebrew.

  • Fair posts guys, I like a mature conversation about these things as opposed to when people randomly stick to one side of an argument cos their best mate has got it and he says its the best! ;)

For me the problem lies IN the OP's question, which is better? As it cant be answered in an easy way, and then the fans come out of the woodwork and annoy me no end, as they only go on what they hear (i.e Sony are rubbish cos they're machine is too expensive or they keep delaying it)

The question posed is like saying, whats better, a ferrari, a Landrover, or a fiesta? Each are from the same trade, but all perform very differently and there is no one right or wrong answer, and peoples opinions only really depend on what they get from their consoles. Sure, the ferrari looks good, and zooms you around, but when you need to get it over rocky terrain or through muddy fields, its useless, but no one focuses on that cos its the 'best' car in their opinion. People dont give the response "Well, I think the 360 has its merrits and such such can accomplish x,y,z, whereas the wii will enable you to do a,b,c, but when the PS3 is released, you can do l,m,n" Its always more the case, "No get a 360 cos they've been out longer and you can get Gears of War and its awesome, and loads cheaper than a PS3" or "No Wii will be the best cos Nintendo are focusing on 'gamers' and what they want, not pandering to big studios for mega bucks. Oh, and its cheaper than the others" These are what I consider uneducated answers, when someone poses the question of what you would rather have. People are entitled to provide their opinions, but when a lot of them are based on little or no experience of other consoles, and go by what the media tells them about the new hardware, then it gets annoying.

Garothb, you say you've got, or played, all 3 consoles, so are more able to make a better judgement on these then a lot of people, but dont forget, no one can really give a true verdict on the consoles, as they are not all officially released yet, and have not ben released side by side, so of course one is going to be 'leading the way', cos not enough people have got a wii or PS3 to say how well it works on-line, how good the graphics can be, how innovative the game play is yet, compared to it, and the opinion formed then becomes partisan and the impression is given "Buy a 360, cos its been out for over a year" and doesnt give the other technology a chance.

I wish i could have all 3 and offer a truly impartial view, but having not played any of the machines, I am as it were, saying to the OP go out and have a play for yourself, and make your own mind up, as people use the consoles to get different things out of them, and any advise you are given is likely to lean towards to or the other.

Sorry to waffle but these are just MY opinions and this whole 'war' thing gets on my nerves quite substantially as you can see!

Quite agree - people do seem to get strangely passionate about their console choice, which is pretty odd. I'd never claim to be able to make a better judgement than anyone else just 'cos I've had the privilige of trying all three...all I can say is that I have enough evidence to decide which one *I* like best so far - and there's a lot to like about the others too; although I'm selling the PS3, I will almost certainly be picking one up again in a couple of years when they're cheaper and there are more games around.

I hope the OP (and anyone else, come to that) enjoys whichever one he picks up.
