New smart phone
Believe or not, I've never owned a mobile. I've generally had a work phone so not had to bother. I'm really impressed with HTC desires and the like so thinking of taking the plunge.
Found this which seems a good deal. Works out at 12.50 unless I've misunderstood.

Can anyone comment or give me better advice. My budget is definitely less than £30 pm, pref less than £20.
I'll make hardly any calls, perhaps 5 texts a day and general internet surfing, no big downloads.
GPS is a must.
after thought...can i get hotmail access?

On that deal you actually pay £20 a month and claim back the difference to make it the £12.50, make sure you understand all the requirements of the redemption process before taking out the deal.0

Thanks guys. Useful reading. Does 250MB seem reasonable for general surfing? Say checking the odd address, cheating in pub quizes
, general mooching around with no heavy downloads. Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
I think if you don't use WiFi and use GPS (google maps/directions) you will have to be very cautious not to go over the limit.0

same company but the next handset up, no redemption deals so a straight forward contract. Worth stretching to if you can

Thanks. I'm fairly confident I can stay within the terms of the redemption requirements and even if I didn't, the Orange Dolphin contract would still be a fiver a month cheaper than the T Mobile, though your suggestion does give unlimited browsing. All a bit of a minefield. I can't find what the costs are if I exceed 250MB on the first option. I'll look a bit harder.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/terms#paym_animal_newI can't find what the costs are if I exceed 250MB on the first option. I'll look a bit harder.Mobile internet - A daily flat rate of £1.00 per day applies for out of bundle data usage. This is subject to a daily fair usage allowance of 25MB, and a monthly download limit of 500MB. 25MB provides enough data for normal levels of email usage and browsing. However, for customers who are planning to download and stream data we would recommend that you take up one of our 500MB or 1GB data bundles. Please note, should you regularly exceed the 25MB daily fair usage allowance and as a result, you reach your 500MB limit before the end of the monthly period, [notice may be given and] network protection controls may be applied to your service. This may result in a reduced speed of transmission See Mobile Internet terms for details of prohibited activities. Other terms apply, see www.orange.co.uk/terms.0 -
For the orange contract total (worst case) amount is £480 not including any extra charges for data, Best case is £300
The one ive linked to is £459.72 (not including any quidco or referral cashback) but with the extra data.
Im not a fan of cashback, but if it pays off you will be much better off. However on the flip side, you are tied in for 2 years, and for me I find my phone is past its best after 18months anyway.
Its not an easy choice to make when commiting to so much money, the only other bit of advice I can give is to try ringing the networks directly and bartering a deal.
Good luck !Bow Ties ARE cool "Just because you are offended, doesnt mean you are right" Ricky Gervais
