hi jostenning, please dont fall into the trap of having to fit all manner of parts ie: coils/leads/catalytic converters etc etc....

having read your diagnosis, it is a possibility that you could have an air leak due to a split breather pipe on the engine intake, these are normally under air filter/induction pipes and is a very common problem for all vw's, check this first.

we recently had a 1.4 polo doing exactly the same and after alot of testing, fitting of donor parts just as we thought it was cured the light came back on again. rechecked all wiring from ecu to all sensors, all ok.
then did a little trick that i learnt in the old skool days(well not that long ago lol) and disconnected the battery on friday night, reconnected it back on the monday..............tested fine ,no light, no hesitation, that was six weeks ago now and car runs like a rolls royce( customer well happy even though it took a while to get it sorted, but he did like our courtesty car) hope this may help

Be very wary of disconnecting the battery....My battery ran down on my Polo after being on holiday, the neighbour restarted and all electrical lights came on and had to be fixed at a garage...

Don't ask me why but the Polo's seem to be very sensitive with their electricals and messing around with the battery may cause the same problems i had...Just warning you :o

My battery went again a year or so later after only a short time even though it was considered fine by the garage and not a battery problem and it caused further electrical problems. If you're going to disconnect it do with a garage in easy distance...:rotfl:

Might be worth just ignoring it. I drove my Audi A4 around for 3 years and put it through 2 MOTs with the engine management light flashing merrily away. It aint a new car -as long as you get your moneyworths out of it, who cares about flashing lights. stick some insulating tape over it:D
