Hello NEH, did you manage to sort the problem and what was it if you dont mind me asking?

I could miss out the truth but i don't think that'll help you...

Mine developed more electrical faults after that and more problems to the point where the electrical engineer who finally looked at it said he had seen nothing like it (guy had worked for at least 20 years in the industry) Anyway he knew i was thinking of selling it and told me to sell it as fast as i could. I ended up trading it in as it was OK when i traded it in....

To be fair mine was a Friday afternoon car and had had various problems from the start of when i bought it but the EPC was the start of the downfall...

Yours might just be a one off however....Sorry :(

Think I will see what happens on Monday when I take it to garage, then if the light reappears, seriously consider trading it in - I can't cope with a car that I can't trust is going to have faults on there that can't be rectified.

If something breaks, I don't mind paying to get it fixed, I just worry when nobody knows what the actual problem is, as the first garage telling me that it was dirty fuel and it obviously isn't that. :(

Probably be about £1000 out of pocket if I do trade it in.

Shame you're not in London, otherwise can recommend a few top VW specialists with a reasonable labour rate.

The VW Polo is a generally a reliable car so am surprised that you're having trouble. The only major issue with the 6N2 is their gearboxes - they can whine which means replacement or refurbing. Other than that they are sound as long as regularly serviced.

Hope you get it sorted out and let us know how you get on.

All modern cars use computers (ecu the main one) to monitor stuff like engine management, this problem could appear in any car made since the mid 90's.
Not really worth losing £1000 and then finding the same thing happens again (as you've found already).

Thank you both for your comments.

I had chosen the 2001 model as had done some research and read that there were more troubles on the models since 2002.

I do worry a lot and having done lots of research on this warning light, have gone into panic mode. I have put some money aside for repairs but after reading various horror stories of even vw garages unable to diagnose the problem, have just gone totally on a downer and I do really like the car but find I am constantly waiting for warning lights to appear now. :(

as i said this morning its easy to diagnose if you pay to have a decent garage plug in their scanner and an indi who comes recommended is better than a dealer because his labour rate is cheaper and hes had hands on experiance of these vw's before
im assuming it is an engine light of course and not your electric power steering thats error coding
these vw's are not all they are cracked up to be ,a nice fiesta but with a blue badge on the front would have been a better long term investment or my personal choice a punto at this end of the market

    Hi sb

it's the emissions warning light not the EPC (engine management) thats lit up

*touches wood and hopes that doesnt come on too*.

if lambda sensor was down youd use a hell of a lot more fuel, youd smell it infact. if its the cat it will smell like rotten eggs after a run.

if this engine has 2 lambdie loos which i strongly suspect it has then the second loobie will show a fault at as little as 0.04 which wouldnt make the car smell of eggs but is sufficient to say faulty cat by the light on the dash board light
(and not a bat out of hell to be seen)

Tested for exhaust leaks but no hissing apparent when you put a ragover the tailpipe.

Car sounds OK ticking over idling, revs are around 800 rpm.

No rotten eggs or petrol smells.

Car just feels a bit rough/with slight loss of power between 20 and 30 mphand slightly sluggish on hills.

Am I looking around £300 to supply and replace a cat?
Also, if you replace a cat, do your also have to replace exhaust system and are the lambdas bought separately from the exhaust?
