I had a similar problem, ive got a 2008 fox. Took it to the dealer, was fixed under warrenty, said it was a faulty sensor and needed a software update.
If only all things in life where that simple.Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0 -
ah the wounders of emission control. TBH. the rag/block test is to primeraly look for air leaks in the system, block the exhaust and if a hole is there in the BBOX or MIDDLE or joints youll hear it flutter through it if no hole car will stall after pressure build up.
the only thing here to do is get it fault code read mobile tune van's have pretty decent rates.0 -
Is it this light?
If it is, there's unfortunately a myriad of things that can cause it light up, and they range from the very expensive to a few quid to fix. 2000/2001/2002 era VWs have all had issues with dodgy sensors (mine included) which can result in the check engine light, luckily if it is one of these dodgy sensors, they're very cheap to replace0 -
Thank you for your helpful comments.
will report back with update on monday0 -
Drat and double drat
the independent garage has looked at it and his conclusion is the cat is on its way out.
He's pricing up a part and labour cost and will get back to me.
Wonder if it's better to try and get a genuine part for this, although I know it will be expensive.0 -
do not buy a cheap one
they are prone to failing an mot once a year old
see post 100 -
thanks sb, is it worth me replacing exhaust at same time and sensors, not sure if these are worn and would they cause damage to cat if they were? :cool:0

no
sensors can be swapped and they arent cheap anyway (£120 for a beetle:eek: )
same for exhaust if its serviceable they can swap it over no problems
this repair wont be cheap you know im afraid0 -
thanks sb, youve been really helpful.
I was just worried that if the exhaust was a bit worn or the sensors then they might damage the new cat.
Still waiting for a phonecall from garage but going to pick it up at 5 anyway, so will have my answer.
Only upside is that I suppose I should expect the car to run more smoothly once its done and maybe get better mpg?
Wonder if its safe to drive home if he cant fit me in immediately, the garage is always really busy.0
