Upgrading RAM

Options
Hi all

I have an Asus laptop. It's about three years old and is working fine. However I think I'd like to increase its RAM (currently 2GB) to enable applications to run better together and make the machine that bit faster - also so I can get Windows 7 and allow it to run ok.

Is upgrading RAM relatively easy on laptops? Something I could do myself or get a local computer guy to do?

Honestly, depending on the model of laptop it can be as easy as putting a DVD into a DVD player (obviously quite hard if you are a woman).

It's an easy job, with the help of youtube you could easily do it yourself, just make sure you get the right type of RAM for your laptop.

2GB of RAM is more than enough for Win 7, and I doubt you have any apps that will take advantage of any more than that.

Agreed. I, obviously, don't know what other apps he/she wants to run, but Windows 7 64bit is running very happily with 2GB ram here with room to spare.

RAM usage on some machines can be upwards of 900mb on Windows 7, obviously these are the ones not taken care of very well.

Regardless, this person wants to upgrade the amount of RAM in his laptop, not to have someone else tell him he has more than enough for whatever he could possibly want to do. Not true.

Press CTRL SHIFT ESC, then go to the Performance tab. If you read the Commit (MB) bit, should be something like xxxx / xxxx, that will tell you something about your memory usage. Feel free to share with us :)

I have an ASUS about the same age, and I am having to upgrade my ram too. I know what the specs are for my DDR2-PC5300 got them from crucial.com/uk and speccy , and it is not because it is running slow, I want to upgrade it to 4gb so I can use fully the max allowed on my W7 64 Pro for VM use, oh and to install the same on Ubuntu AMD64. I know lot of "software engineers" who think a universal tool is a hammer, but don't understand "unscrew the screw in the bottom then push ...." :D

I was under the impression this was a money saving site, and as the OP won't see a blind bit of difference by adding extra RAM then it's simply a waste of money.

Thank you for all the replies. Wasn't expecting so many.

I use my laptop for DTP software, Adobe Premier and a couple of bespoke databases. It's Premier that eats the memory. But yes, I don't want to buy something I don't need.

I have gone into Performance under Windows Task Manager and cannot find any numbers like mentioned above. It says physical memory 52%.

My hard drive also seems to be segregated. I have a C drive with only about 5% capacity and a D drive with 108GB available. I think my work may have done this when I asked them to install software. How do I undo this and combine the two? (My overall capacity is 250GB)

    Thanks again.

Are you using Windows 7 64 bit ? If not max you can use is about 3.2gB or is that 3.2Gb. But someone may suggest options about adobe and premiere.
