Where can I get a rice bowl for the steamer from? I've tried eBay with no luck - ours didn't come with one0

Have found my instruction book. (My steamer is a Tefal one I got as a bargain on Amazon a few years ago!)
It depends which type of rice you are using how long it takes, but the instructions are the same for all.
150g rice with 300ml boiling water in the rice bowl. Takes about 20-25 minutes (except brown rice takes 40.)
This does work because I've done it although to be honest, it is easier and quicker to use a saucepan on the hob!!

We do brown rice in the steamer, 40 mins just cover with water, no holes in rice bowl steam sourounds it so it heats that way, if you do not have one any flat plastic cooking dish would do, microvave bowl or suchlike. We have an el cheapo cookworks steamer and had a posh one before, no difference in the rice. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

During the Summer when we had no kitchen, I dug out our Tefal steamer.
The first time we tried rice (no instructions!), it was an absolute disaster as like you we put the rice into the rice bowl and water into the bottom reservoir .... yes, well, uncooked rice was the result!
Having then found the instructions on the Tefal website ..... excellent rice has ensued
Wash the rice as per normal. Put in the amount of rice, then cover with water, until the water is above the rice by about a flat hands thickness ..... put water in the bottom reservoir as per normal and cook for 20-25 mins, check occasionally to see if enough water ..... perfect
I became quite a convert to the steamer after this! And boiling eggs is a cinch tooGC - March 2024 -0 -

Hi wayne
I've added your query onto an earlier thread which has some helpful tips.

Putting rice in an electric steamer's basket and having to actually put additional water in too isn't really steaming it... You might be "Steaming" it i.e. It's inside a "Steamer" but that's not the same as what some of you want i.e. Traditional Chinese style (although it's pretty much the same anyway!). If you're going to put it in the basket with water then you're just heating the water to cook it and you may as well just cook it in a pan... I mean they don't put a little cup of water in a bamboo steamer do they!
The problem you have is that most electric steamers just don't produce enough hot moist steam to cook the rice properly but if you want to give it a go then miss out the rice tray and put a piece of damp muslin in the bottom of the normal basket instead (or some pierced greaseproof paper at a pinch) and put the soaked/rinsed rice on that, cover it with another piece and then steam away! Only use one basket instead of the stack to get maximum steaming power.
For an easier method, buy a bamboo steamer or use a pan!0
