Here's a quick and easy way to cook rice. Put dry rice into a saucepan and wash repeatedly with cold water until the waste water is clear. Then put more cold water in until the level of the water is about a centimeter above the level of the rice. Bring to the boil and then simmer for 10 minutes. Ready to serve. If you're feeling particularly flamboyant, you can put couple of drops of olive oil in to keep it from sticking, though this isn't necessary.

    Hi,

I've got a steamer too but not sure - do you have to put water in both the rice tray& the water cannister in the bottom or just the rice tray? Sorry if this sounds a stupid question!

Water in the bottom (always water in the bottom!!) enough to last the cooking time recommended in the instructions (40 mins in mine) and 1cup of rice to 1cup of water in the tray. I suppose it also matters where you put the rice - I cook mine at the top, hence the longer timings.

  • Hi everyone

This is my first posting so here goes. My rice is not very good and I have bought an electric steamer as I have heard that the rice is lovely cooked in it. When I tried it at home after 1 hour, it was still nowhere near cooked.

In the rice bowl which you put inside the steamer basket are you supposed to water in there as well. The instructions are not very clear.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    thanks

You do have to put water in with the rice as well as in the bit you usually put the water into. How much depnds on how much rice I think. I can dig out the instruction book for mine later if you like and tell you how much my instruction book says to put.

  • Thanks for that. Would appreciate your instructions as I tried it last night but think I put too much water in as rice was very sticky. I suppose it is trial and error.
  • Hi,

I had the same problem when I got mine at Xmas! Instructions badly translated from the original Korean I guess!

For 2 people I use 2 handfuls of rice and just enough water to cover (some will float!) Then steam til its done. In mine its about 15-20 mins, and is the best rice I've ever made!

I know it's not really relevant as you want to do it in the steamer...but one of my friends told me to put twice as much water in as rice into a saucepan, with salt if you use it.
Bring it to a rolling boil. Stir it, leave boiling for another 2 mins, put the lid on and turn the heat off.
You must leave it with the lid on for 20 mins. Then stir with a fork and the rice should be fluffy and the water all gone.

I've also had problems with rice in the steamer & mine is Tefal - so the instructions should have been ok.
Anyway, I put the rice in the rice basket & put it in the steamer, I put the water in the bottom as usual & turned it on.
    NOTHING.
It warmed up, but did not cook, I left it on for ages.

So its not just me that can't worked it out!!

How can you put the water in the rice holder? Its ages since I used the rice bit, but it must have holes in it (for the hot steam to enter) & the water would just run out???
  • Mine is just a little solid white tray. Dunno about anyone elses... Cheapo one from ASDA (hence the funky instructions) but it does say to put water in the rice bowl as well as the reservoir
