cooking rice in the steamer

Hi,

Anybody know how to cook rice in an electric steamer. I know I used to do it but can't find the instructions and last attempt it was rock hard!

I just put the rice in the rice basket and cover it with boiling water then fill the water up as usual and cook it for about 45 minutes (brown rice in an oldish not particularly powerful steamer). I don't know if that's how the instructions say to do it but it works for me. HTH

  • For white basmati rice I use a cup of rice to one and a half cups water and steam it in the rice basket that comes with the steamer, mine usually takes around 20 mins.

We had steamed rice (cooked as alec eiffel describes but for a shorter time as it was white) for the first time a few days ago and were impressed. Although it took quite a bit longer than boiling it was less starchy* than with a saucepan, and less messy as the leftover rice was left in the rice basket and covered with clingfilm for the next day's lunch so didn't have to chase grains around the kitchen when washing up as usual!

*We are not particularly fussy when it comes to rice and don't mind if its sometimes sticky, unlike my mum who moans if I feed her starchy rice

  • Be careful to cool the rice quickly and keep it in the fridge, otherwise its a it of a health hazard.

I have a streamer that has a plastic tray with it, to cook rice in.

Do I put the rice in the tray with water or just in the tray by itself ?

Also any idea how long it take to cook ?

    thanks

You need to put water with your rice for it to cook. I didn't do this the first time I did it so this is how I know! I have no instructions for my steamer but I think it took approx 20-25 minutes. I just checked it every now and again.

Ever since getting my steamer, I have never cooked rice any other way! I fill the tray with, say, 200g basmati rice, and 200 ml of water (i use just boiled water from the kettle). Then I put the steamer on for 15 mins and give the rice a gentle stir after about 10 mins just to make sure it getsd nice and fluffy. Yum!

Some rice does take quite a while, seem to remember doing brown rice in it that took nearly 40 mins but it'll depend on what you use - best to keep checking it. Like Maow says, basmati is much quicker - njoy
  • Hi,

I've got a steamer too but not sure - do you have to put water in both the rice tray& the water cannister in the bottom or just the rice tray? Sorry if this sounds a stupid question!
