o2 modems & Plusnet...

Would the Thompson modem i have be compatible with Plusnet's service, therefore saving me £4.99 rather than having to buy a modem from them?

Don't O2 ask for their Thomson routers back when you leave them???

they asked for mine back but I left during the contract period due to moving home and O2 being unable to fulfil their end of the contract. If O2 do then they will supply a Free-post envelope or charge you £50 for the router if not returned.
If you are on a 30 day rolling contract then you won't be asked for the router back as they have charged you for it. if you got the router free then IMO it would be petty of O2 to ask for it back if you have fulfilled your minimum contract.

Towards the bottom of their t&c .pdf it says
13.3 You are only permitted to use the Equipment to connect to our network, or a network approved
by us. We cannot support any other equipment used to connect to the Services.
Reading between the lines IMO this phrase basically contradicts itself because they allow you to have BT home phone and use their router, a Thompson Speedtouch, just as many other ISPs use BT so how could you break any T&C'S by using it with another provider if you can get it set up to their service?
You may be best off phoning and asking O2.
Someone please tell me what money is

Yes it will work, but it's rather limited on the features front thanks to O2 "dumbing" it down with their own firmware.

You aren't breaking any T&C's, they simply won't provide any tech suppport if you choose to use your own router.

  • It is, in some way, preconfigured for Plusnet so when you connect it up, it just works.

I was extremely impressed and feel your £4.99 would be well spent.

You can use any ADSL modem router with Plusnet, the 02 Thompson router is identical anyway. You will simply have to enter the correct connection data manually-a five minute job.
The Plusnet version is simply flashed with that data already.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thanks for the info guys...think i may just get a router with Plusnet just for reassurance.

  • Oh, out of interest any way measuring internet usage, is there a tool i could download? I am aware of the 10gb limit, but i am currently on an unlimited package with o2 and they have no way of seeing what my usage is. Or any idea of what 10gb usage would be in emails, videos, music?

I'm fairly sure that Plusnet send you an email when your monthly usage expires.....think it points that out on their website - somewhere
