Orange Credit Check Refused

  • I have a good (nearly excellent) Experian credit score and an Excellent Equifax. I've also had contract phones for the last 10 years or so with Vodafone and 3. So when Orange declined I looked into it and as others here have noted, you get no reason for the refusal. Trying to get hold of Orange "who pride themselves on excellent customer service" is like asking for directions at the Tower of Babel. Script Jockies in some far-flung land with whome you stand no chance. Try getting hold of Orange's Credit Referrals Dept (Nexus House, Darlington) and you quickly discover Orange and the rest of the English speaking world have a different meaning for the word "excellent". Standard "Customer Disservice" 01707 315500 number and letters signed by people with only a first name.

If, having discovered something on your credit records, you try and correct it you find that it will take upwards of a month to reflect. If you're lucky!!

Orange don't deserve any customers imho.

Probably no consolation but had similar experience this week with 02 via Dialaphone. Bought Equifax report (what 02 uses) perfect 'Green' 900+ score, been on electoral register at this address years, no missed payments, no outstanding bills, plenty of perfect mobile contracts over the years, etc. and turned down because 'did not meet 02's criteria'
Went into 02 shop and they no idea why either.

Think they all much of a muchness!

Good luck finding something suitable. Jo

As I mentioned on another thread you "credit score" is irrelevent, it's a number generated by the cridt people to give you a rating.

Howerver any compnay looking to tak you on as a customer DO NOT see this score, they get you credit record and make a decsion on that, not an artifical number you have.

The numbers useful to monitor how your credit record looks but if you had a score of 999 or 1000 then you could still be turned down.
  • It would be very useful to know what it is that is putting peoples lives on hold. I understand what you are saying and thank you for the insight. Sadly, with Orange (and almost every organisation) this opportunity never presents itself. In the interests of data accuracy, which would benefit both Orange (in this particular case), the CR Agency and of course myself, there needs to be a great deal more transparency.

It's a bit like a Kafka novel set in some Soviet police state at the moment... in this day and age powerful private organisations must be accountable, especially when there appears to be a rather cosy cartel that has no real interest in verifying that the data held on us (and without our consent) is accurate.

Yes, we can print off a report, but what does it *actually* mean? It's hard to ignore the apparently rather pointless score we are encouraged to improve. It's all we have! When Orange is performing a credit check it is a bit of software looking for some very specific things in our entire credit record.

I (we) need to know what these things are; and more to the point, once the software has identified a reason, it's a very short step to actually report what it is. Clearly it's not a "we can't" situation, it's a "we won't"; and that is disrespectful.

It's not hard to see the commercial imperative either - keep 'em guessing and they have to keep on checking. Ho !@%# ho.
