Orange Credit Check Refused

I was declined by Orange for an 18 month contract after a credit check today. I was baffled as I have never had a problem before. I have since logged on to credit expert to see what the problem might be. However, my rating is good and I can't see any reason why I was refused a contract.
Orange customer care couldn't tell me what the problem is.
Has anyone had similar problems?

The credit expert score is just Experians view of your credit score, nothing more.
Orange will view your credit file and history but do not use the numbers credit expert give you, they generate your own according to there own scheme. They also won't tell you why you have failed as if you were dishonest you could fix the one thing to try again.
If you have a clean record the most likely problem is a mismatch between your address on file and the one you gave, a space in the wrong place, slightly different spelling of the road or village. Another issue is a recent move and your not on the electoral register at that new address yet.0 -
If you've moved in the last 3 months, that'll have an effect.
If other credit checks had gone through the same day, that'll have an effect also.
Not being on the electoral roll will fail you most times.
Could be errors in the info passed through.
Could be issues with you're area (some area's are targeted by fraudsters now and again, the criteria for passing the credit check is then beefed up).
They could be have a period when they only take customers with credit score of X or over and you came in a few points below that.
There are endless reason. The guys in CS won't know, it isn't them that do the check, they can't even see it on their system.0 -
Thanks for your reply.
I am on the electoral register so the only possible problem, as far as I can see, is a typo in the application. But as they won't tell me (and I can understand why to some extent) I can't resolve it with them. I'll try to discuss it with Orange in store and hope they can help me out - otherwise I'll try another provider.0 -

If there was a 'typo' on the app form they may not be able to 'find' you. ie say your name is John but they spelt it Jon they may not pick you up at your address. Happened to me witha credit card recently the advisor put BB instead of 1 B in my surname - the did rectify it in branch, maybe worth a folow up -a s you say in store0 -
The Orange store don't have access to the info either. All their systems do is give them a pass/fail when they credit check someone.
All your credit info is covered under the data protection act, and can't be accessed by just anyone.
And don't forget, they don't have to give you a contract. They can decline you for many reasons...0 -

Thanks Jon,
It just seems a bit odd that there doesn't appear to be a way of challenging their decision. I mean, if it is a mere spelling mistake or something equally trivial, then Orange have lost a good customer. I'd have thought they would be keen to double check - as it has potentially lost them several hundred pounds.0 -

Even money says it's all automated, and they haven't really lost you, you said you'll be going instore to try.
All the networks will get this to some extent, for you not going to Orange, there will be someone not going to Vodafone, o2,TM etc...0 -

You could call CS during business hours (9 to 5) and ask the CSR to call credit referrals and ask them.
Credit referrals is a none customer facing dept (ie they don't take calls have no number that you can get them on). They 'might' give the CSR some info as to why you were refused.0 -
The "yes" or "no" approach is not the whole truth. Whilst many are passed and some declined outright, others are asked to put up a deposit. I'll wager that a straight decline when there is truly a decent credit file backing it up may well mean there was an error.
I'd speak to their customer services people before proceeding elsewhere.0 -
I am pretty sure that the customer services dept will not provide an answer as to why the OP has failed a credit check unfortunately. I work at Phones4u and have seen many customers pass fail on some networks but pass for a contract on another, each network uses different criteria for its credit vetting and so my advice is not to pursue a failed application but just try another. Hope you can get the phone/deal you want0
