Help with new phone for son!

Hi,

Any recommendations really appreciated. I have just found my son's mobile phone has done a full cycle in the washing machine and now obviously won't switch on.

He is 13 and I have said I will replace but his idea of replacing is an Iphone. No chance! Can anyone suggest a 'cool' phone for my teenager at a sensible price?

May thanks.:)

This depend on your definition of 'sensible' and what phone he had.

IMO, Orange San Francisco for £100ish is cool enough for 13y.o.

The OSF packs the most punch per £. It's available in grey as well as white, which might be more suited for a boy.

Remember that you'll need some kind of reasonable data allowance, as it's an Android device that is designed to work online.

Have you actually tried to dry out the old one. Pull it all apart and put it in the airing cupboard for a day.

If it was his fault, (left it in a pocket or something) get him to pay something towards it by getting a paper round or doing jobs around the house. That'll teach him.

Am trying to dry it out now. Have put it in the airing cupboard in a bowl of rice. Read it somewhere it might work but I am not usually that lucky.

Yes I suppose it was his fault as it was left in his trouser pocket so am expecting him to put something towards it. Must be the males in my house because none of them empty their pocktets not even their dad!!

Thanks everyone for your input and I will go and have a look at the San francicsco.:)

I'd second the San Francisco. Been looking at one myself.
If you decide to go that way, check in an Orange store what discounts they give. For example, they give 25% off for NHS employees, but it's not shown on their website and only seems to apply to contracts, but I'm sure they do other deals.
If you wanted just the handset, buying it as PAYG an getting it unlocked, which is easy apparently, means you could use it with the existing SIM and network.

£100 seems an awful lot of money for a 13 year old who is careless enough to leave a phone in his pocket when the washing's due to be done.

Actually it seems a lot of money to pay for any 13 year old to be honest.

To be honest, I'd ask on Freecycle to see if anyone has an old phone they don't want.... if your son can prove he can look after that one until his Birthday / Christmas then I'd get him a 'cool' phone.

Just think. If he had had an iPhone you would not have been able to easily open it up to remove the battery and dry it out.
