I was feeling some problem with the car engine and perforamance was not good. Therefore I decided to book a interim service with the local Kiwik fit guys...

IMO the HGF had already started - drove mine for along time (see below) before it finally mixed all the oil/water. Decision was scrap car (p reg 214) and get a new one or "better the devil you know" - it had been very reliable for 2 years so spent £360 on mobile mechanic inc cambelt thermostat, waterpump. Been 100% solid over 6000 miles since

If you are desperate and the oil doesnt look like coffee (yet) - search web/ebay for "kseal" - mine drained the water in 50 miles from the header tank. Put kseal in it and carried on driving for 20000miles with just the odd topup!!!

I had a Rover 414 - nice car, very pleasant to drive. I kept a keen eye on the water as I was aware of the HGF issues.
Sure enough, at around 80K miles the water was getting discoloured and HGF had set in. Got a quote for around £350+ and decided to "bin" the car instead.

Wouldn't go for a Rover again - well-documented issues regarding HGF. You may "love" your rover but you won't when you start getting big bills for HG replacement due to poor engine design.
Constant change is here to stay
  • Read in this post that replacing the inlet manifold gaskets can fix the problem, any more details?

Owned Rovers for the last 15 years and have loved every minuit, I have a rover 25 which I've owned from new. Which has just started using water. The car has been the most reliable inexpensive motor I have ever owned. I bought a new Suzuki Grand Vitara in 2006 as Rover had gone bust and I needed a good tow car, the point I'm trying to make is that this Japanese car in my experience is rubbish (5 breakdown's in first year, 5 urgent safety recalls in last 3 years).
No doubt there are many suzuki owners who love them and have had no problems it's just personal opinion!!

my head gasket was replaced last year and we were told once it was done it couldn't be done again and the car was finished with. We were also told that getting the head replaced didn't always work and it was pot luck, it didn't really work and i have been topping it up with water every two to three weeks but this last week it has gotten really bad, can it be fixed again or is that the end of my car
