I was lucky to get a mate to replace the head gasket on my Megane, six months ago at a cost of £200 quid, saved me about £100.0

I think this happened yesterday!
'Smoke' is now pouring out of exhaust pipe! The garage never told me to stop driving it (or they wouldn't have let me take it home out of their yard).
I made sure the water was topped up before I went shopping and on the way home it kept trying to stall at junctions and then came the 'smoke'.
I'll take the keys to the garage and let them pick it up.

head gaskets on rovers :rotfl: i have owned rovers for a long time now and have fitted headgaskets to each one i had (my last one only had 40,000 miles on the clock) with this headgasket parts cost should be no more than £75 (as i have a trade account with my local motor factors shop, so the mechanic who is doing yours should pay no more than this) for about £75 you will get :
headgasket set which includes
headgasket
gaskets for inlet and exhaust
various gaskets for water
oils seals
and rocker cover gasket
metal dowels
plus you need head bolts aswell as these are made to stretch and only BE USED ONCE!!!!! these are no more than £20
once the head is removed it will need to be skimmed, this is because the head has warped from over heating, therefore not having a flat seal between the head and the engine block
THIS IS A MUST READ AS IF YOU DO NOT ASK FOR THESE PARTS YOUR HEADGASKET WILL GO AGAIN:eek:
What i do say is make sure the mechanic uses PAYEN gaskets which have the RUBBER oil seal on the headgasket, as some come with a copper one and these are the known for warping the heads, BUT DO ASK FOR HIM TO USE THE PAYEN gaskets as these are the best gaskets for rovers, plus this will come with the metal locating dowels as some come with plastic ones and these tend to break and not line up the head properly
and finally ask before getting the job done for the mechanic to save all your old bits so that you can make sure he has replced the lot and not done half a job
head gasket kit
the head bolts, these are very long, about a foot and half
hope that this is of some help to you :beer: steves cleenz valeting :beer:0 -
If you're planning to keep the car for a while, and the cambelts will need to be replaced soon (usually a somewhat costly service item), consider getting them done at the same time as replacing the head gasket. You will only pay for the additional parts, as the cambelts have to be removed and refitted anyway.0

This is exactly what the garage suggested to me and I went ahead with it. So My once cleared credit card has now got my £518 garage bill on it now.
Oh well, should last me long enough to pump my bike tyres up!

I had a Rover 214i (1994) that my brother gave to me:beer: . It ran fine all the while he had it. Once I'd learnt to drive I started using the car and almost immediately the engine started leaking water, which I was forever filling up.
Took it to my cousin-in-laws garage and he replaced the water pump and only charged me £30 for doing so. Ran fine for a while, then the water pump went again:huh: . This happened basically because the head gasket was obviously on its way out. Didn't worry about it too much as some days it would be fine and others it would be touch and go.
Anyway, clutch decided it wanted to die on me so because I needed the car for work I stumped up £208 to have a new one. Two weeks later  the car really did die on me.....nasty eggy smell, water leaking, engine cutting out you name it.
Decided in the end to sell the car on E-Bay, listing all it's faults. After a barrage of abuse from Rover haters some bloke rang me up and I agreed to sell him the car for £50, which was a deal for him because it still had 5 months of Tax left. But by this time I couldn't even be bothered to claim the tax back, I just wanted shot of the car:wave: .
Couple of days later he rang me up and said the car was fine, to which I replied "it wont be, trust me", after all, this is exactly what the car had always done to me....run....not run.....run...etc.
Ended up selling half the house to gather enough money for a new motor :rotfl: (Renault) and have decided never to touch a Rover again. I have been told by many a person in the mechanical know that Rovers are renowned for the gaskets going.
So anyone out there thinking about buying a Rover, think twice, they're crap:lipsrseal .Halifax Personal Loan £23,000 :think:0 -

To spend say £300 to reapir a car that is over 10 years old i think that is value for money if this is all it has needed in the over 10 years it has been on the road and now you own a renault  well i would rather pay for a rover to be fixed than a renault, just look at the price in parts on the renault:beer: steves cleenz valeting :beer:0 -

I've got a 03 Rover 25 impression S.... so 'touch wood' it shouldn't need anything doing for a fair few years but I think considering the age of the OP's car £350 for a head gasket is a good deal! Mate of mine has an M reg laguna and got his mate to do his head gasket for £60... but we all know the 'quality' of mate's work! lol.
And for the record I love my rover..:smileyhea

Difference is, you shouldn't need to repair the Renault quite so often as the Rover. Don't get me wrong, when I had the Rover I was very happy with the performance, it's just the reliability issue, especially with the gaskets. If it's a simple case of the gasket going and you sort it pretty quick then you should be fine for a good while. However, they are renowned for going and you might not know anything for a while which would end with having to pay for a new engine block etc....(not cheap)
The Rover I owned only had 80K on the clock and absolutely everything imaginable went wrong with it, whereas the Renault that I had purchased had 119K (now 124K) on the clock and is in absolutely tip-top condition without having much at all done to it. Also, you needn't pay expensive prices for any car parts regardless of make, just take a quick trip to your local breakers.
Furthermore, and lastly, I would imagine that Rover parts will be more and more difficult to source in the future due to the liquidation of the Rover Group.
Oh and immoral_angeluk, if you love your Rover then you stick with it. You may be lucky and have one that lasts you a long while. You see, I'm just a bitter ol' man with a grudge against Rover now;)Halifax Personal Loan £23,000 :think:0
