Cost of head gasket replacement Rover 200

I remember reading somewhere that the Rover HGF was basically caused by perishing inlet manifold seals, and if these were replaced every so often, there should be no problem. Is this a load of tosh?? If there was anything in it, I presume that some enterprising soul would be marketing a fix by now.
I think, from memory, that a leak started at these seals, and because these engines run with relatively little coolant, it rapidly got out of hand, overheating, warped head, etc. Anyway, that was the logic. Interesting to know if there is any truth to it, anyone else come accross this????0 -

there is a fix for these engines but i think its a bit too expensive to do it,as another has mentioned you can use land rover parts which are apparently a bit more upto the job.
dont know what truth is in your story,i think its just one of these crap designs. it holds as much coolant as anything else this size.
ended up a bit of a bargain the car, bought it at auction for £600,paid £350 for repair, while other cars with higher miles were in autotrader for £1500,so it worked out to be a bit of a bargain....work permit granted!0 -

My first car was a J Reg Rover. Felt like a tank compared to the fiesta I had learnt it but we did like it. Bit of a money pit but when the Head Gasket went we had to say Goodbye.:j0

Why anyone would buy a Rover of any type is beyond my comprehension..:rotfl:0

I was given it but they arent that bad. We actually liked the car, my kids still mention it even though I have a nice new car to drive (work not part of debt). It was cheap to run and repair (£15 for a new wing mirror when I misjudged our driveway oops!) except for the dreaded head gasket.:j0

Especially that awful cityrover thing that was actually an Indian Tatra slightly tarted up and grossly over priced.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

rovers are no longer in production because they were crap. They didnt make sense to buy new as the designs were obsolete. They dont make sense to buy used even if they are cheap because of reliability issues. It wont be long before they have disapeared from our roads for good.0

What absolute rubbish to say that all Rovers are unreliable. Generaly, Rovers are as reliable as most other cars ( ok you can get a bad one but this is true for any make/model ). There are some better and some worse.
All cars have a paritcular problem that appears again and again. You look on any forum that caters for a specific model of car and you will see particular problems that come up time and time again and you will see people saying don't buy this car because it is unreliable.
With the K-Series engine it has always been the headgasket. It is a known and well documented problem, there are no surprises if you have a K series engine. There are not many other parts of the car that are particularly unreliable on a regular basis and if it wasn't for the headgasket problem then they would be fairly high spec cars at a reasonable price ( I am really talking about the 25, 45 and 75 models ). Most people I know that have Rovers have had the head gasket problem but they have had very little else go wrong. Also, because of the head gasket reputation, a lot of garages will say its the head gasket whenever you bring the car in that may have something similar so they just set about doing the job and any other fault may be overlooked.
My Dad has a Rover 45 and it was losing coolant big-time. The garage said it was the head gasket and quoted him over £400. I had a look at it and it turned out to be the inlet manifold gasket which was £2 to buy and about an hour to fit. That cured the problem and he has not had any problems since. The garage didn't really even look, they just said its a Rover so its a head gasket. The results with the uprated head gasket have been very good so far. There are none that I have heard of that have gone so far when the uprated gasket has been used.0
