I think we need to add a BUT to that statement :rotfl:

Unless it's a hidden camera (behind a sign or tree's) at night and the person doesn't know that road, it's not always obvious what the speed limit is when you turn onto another road, or just after a traffic island. Most local authorities get it right (signs), but there are several which don't.
Then you also have the camera's hidden inside wheelie bins and horse boxes.... Which i've heard still happens.

The onus is and always has been on the driver to find out what the speed limit is. If you don't know, then don't go on that road.

The Gatsos quite frequently seem to flash oncoming cars -- I've been flashed 5 or 6 times on the A68 in Scotland while travelling under the speed limit by cameras on the other side of the road. Nothing ever comes of it of course.

I have little sympathy for people who get caught by fixed cameras -- not only have they been travelling over the limit (not necessarily unsafe in and of itself), but they've also been inattentive enough not to notice the camera as they went by. It's the lack of attention that is likely to cause an accident; the speed merely makes the mess harder to clear up.

I think you maybe confusing them with Truvelos.

That's quite an assumption to make.

What assumption? If they have been caught exceeding the speed limit, it normally means they have been speeding.

Have to agree totally. Bit of a high horse statement. Sure of u drive a Gwiz then u wont be speeding either.

Are you saying that you should be allowed to exceed the speed limit?

I would say it's down to luck (and knowing where the cameras are).

If you say that you never break speed limits, I'll be very dubious about your honesty :D

There's a big difference, between breaking the speed limit from time to time and breaking the speed limit from time to time and coming on an internet forum and whining on about getting caught.

Oh come on old chap, that depends very heavily on the type of roads - you may be on an unfamiliar wide straight road with a stupidly low limit - they do exist.

So, that is a poor excuse to breaking the speed limit and an even poorer one for getting caught.

The flashes are too quick to destroy your night vision.

Technically this is true, but the large green/purple afterimage they leave behind has much the same effect.

Nope, they're Gatsos -- they are not supposed to flash oncoming cars but occasionally do.

Are they technically GATSOs in Germany? The forward facing ones I've seen there (and in Norway) have a dull red flash rather than a bright white one.

    That's the thing I can't remember :o

It could well be that they're Truvelos.

Mind you forward facing speed cameras could be very useful for forgetful MPs

Truvelos use an infrared flash, so are quite easy to distinguish from the white flash of a Gatso, that and the box is a different shape.
