    Yes I tried that but assumed I didnt want a linux option as running windows xp so tried the bartpe option and that just copied files to my hard drive?

    Have now copied a linux boot cd so will try it to make sure it works

    boot up from it (you may have to change the boot order in the bios, or press F12 at boot to select the cd boot), then launch macrium from the cd and check to see if the restore option can see your usb drive with the backup on it - obviously don't go ahead and do a restore otherwise you will wipe your system, it's just to test the the linux cd boots on your machine, and has drivers for your usb device
