I dont get this at all is all sounds so pointless. So you have to spend time putting money into a different account, to make things a couple of seconds quicker at the tills.
Or is it about not having to carry a card or cash?
What if the battery in the phone runs out and you want to buy something?

    Seems so pointless

I can understand your scepticism but they already have contactless cards this is just the next evolution. So yeh you have to top up the chip to a max of £100 but then you only have to take out your phone. No cards or cash(in theory until everyone gets the system) so ideally your lessening the chance of losing cash and cards.

Im getting mine in the next couple of weeks :)

Contactless cards I see the benefit on small purchases as it saves time with little risk. But when do you only have to take out your phone? i take my wallet with me everywhere evan when i don't intend to spend any money as it has all my drivers licence, RAC card etc, oh and my keys so i can get back in.

Personally I doubt I would use this. I have around 20 cards, this includes not only my credit and debit card but things such as my student ID (for student discounts), my drivers licence (for proof of age) and various loyalty and membership cards. I have a purse which I keep all these in and take it whenever I go out, I never know when somewhere might offer student discount, or I might want to buy something age-restricted etc so just prefer to take them all. I would never want to have to transfer money somewhere in advance if I wanted to spend it, and would only use it if the service enabled me to replace all these cards (inc the loyalty cards and student card etc) at every shop I may want to go into. Otherwise I'd still need to take my purse out, and there's no point in replacing the cards if I end up taking them anyway.

It's handy as another means of paying, but I wouldn't rely on it.

It would be great for emergencies should you happen to lose/forget your card.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

I would be surprised if the phone needs to have battery remaining - the contactless credit cards don't require power after all.

I'm waiting for them to release one of these that's not tied to a credit product, then I'll probably get one.

I order pretty much anything banking related. First Direct account for the ridiculously good telephone banking - I phoned them about a transaction I was having trouble with with another bank, they passed me through straight away to their department that would normally deal with the same thing and told me exactly what to tell the other bank (and they were bang on the money), First Direct for their £2500 cash machine withdrawal limits (actually I'm not sure the cap isn't higher than that - basically you phone them up and assuming you have your debit card with you (this isn't Natwest Emergency Cash) you can temporarily increase your daily withdrawal limit and withdraw a much larger amount, Natwest for the Emergency Cash, A&L for the £500 0% overdraft, Halifax for the free fivers, Lloyds TSB for the same-day cheque clearing*. Faster payments and mobile banking means my money's available from whichever card I happen to be carrying anyway.

*I realize this isn't really clearing, if the cheque bounces you get charged and you end up overdrawn.

Note to self - good identity to steal :p

I like the sound of this mobile payment thing - but then I also like the sound of contactless credit cards and yet Barclaycard only seem to offer one or two products with it rather than offering it to all of their customers meaning I can't get it :(
  • So the next thing is for Vodafone to buy a bank - RBS?

This sounds like extra hassle having to transfer money in advance and tapping a phone and entering a pin is about the same as inserting a card and entering a pin, the only advantage is not carrying a card (which takes up almost zero space in a wallet) with you as well as a phone.

I'm sure the card will die in the end but this doesn't seem to offer anyone any advantages.
