Yes, but you know they are there. If the OP is unfamiliar with the area, it is not advisable to wander around in a car, hoping to find a vacant free parking space at the weekend.
That's funny, I don't recollect "wandering round in my car looking for a space" - I didn't "know they were there". There are thing called maps and satellite photographs - and a teeny bit of common sense - I didn't try Chiswick High Rd for a start.

Oh for heaven's sake, wind your neck in. All I was doing was suggesting an alternative to the OP, that is what forums are for.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

And thanks (both) for the train recommendation, but that's going to be rather expensive from Gloucester, and it's not easy for me to get to the train station anyway (ie not without paying to park up for the day anyway, plus it's another 40 minutes added to the journey)
I think you misinterpret what i was saying. If your coming down that road/motorway then denham or gerrards cross with regular and frequent trains into town and out again will negate the horror of getting into london by car.
£6 per day max plus your train ticket and it adds up to a very reasonable and safe and quick way to get in and out of londonone of the famous 50 -

The trouble with Gerrards Cross is that you can only go into Marylebone. If you time it wrong it could take over an hour to get to places like Chelsea. With parking at three pounds fifty a day (Chiltern Rail do three-for-free; three or more in the car and parking is free) and the cost of going in to London from there is more expensive than from a LU station. Going from Denham is even worse, the trains don't always stop there and the last train is earlier than it is a Gerrads Cross. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Flipping 'eck. An hour from Gerrards Cross to Chelsea. :wall:The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Awesome responses, again, thank you
Going to try both ways, Hillingdon one time and shortly after will go to Chiswick and see how I get on from there. Both solutions seem decent to me so a bit of experimentation is maybe the best way to go.
Was also slightly tempted by the Oxford Park and Ride, but that'd cost us £32! So no chance really.
Thanks again0 -
What you haven't said blizeH is whether your best route into London from your corner of Gloucestershire is the M4 or the M40? Makes a bit of difference in terms of whether Hillingdon (off the M40 - well it's the A40 by that point) or Chiswick (off M4) might work out best for you.
Also definitely worth checking what Underground lines are closed if visiting on the weekend or a bank holiday - on the TfL service update page, there's options for 'Today', 'This weekend' and 'Future dates' which shows information for the next month:
www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/tube/default.html
You can also sign up to get a weekly email from TfL - click on the 'Weekend closures email' link on the above page.
On-street parking in the Chiswick area seems to work out quite well for many people. At Hillingdon, the controlled parking zone (CPZ) ends about half a mile south of the station (Ryefield Avenue is outside the zone) - not sure what parking on the street there is like though, but if there's any issue I'd imagine it's easier at the weekend. Given that it's only a quid to park in the station car park at weekends, I don't imagine you'd need to resort to that unless the car park was full (unlikely if you're arriving early-ish on a w/e I'd think) - but it's useful to have a back-up plan just in case. If people are keen, then local councils put a certain amount of information about their CPZs on their website, though it varies in how easy it is to track down the relevant information i.e. the relevant maps and times of operation of each zone.0 -
Many thanks for the reply - I'm coming in from the M40 (live in Quedgeley) so yeah Hillingdon could be perfect I think
Really good shout on checking the TFL website too, thanks, it just says this:
Or maybe it's not a bad time to try the Chiswick one first ^_^
And good tip on having a backup plan, thank you - hopefully it won't come to that but it's worth considering yeah. I think we're aiming to get in very early (before 9am) so hopefully won't have any troubles with the £1 (or £2 if we stay over night at all) parking fee!0
