Best west London cheap car park -> tube -> central london?

Hopefully the title makes a little bit of sense! We're looking to start regularly visiting London, and due to the fact it seems a real challenge to find a reasonably priced hotel we're probably going to drive to a car park in the west side of London (around 2 hours) and then tube it in from there.

My question is where's the best place to go/park without being too central (high prices, lots of traffic) but also conveniently placed with a tube station nearby?

My friend recommended Hillingdon which is only £1 on weekends which is awesome, but similarly it's quite north of where we'd be coming in from, so ideal for going to places like Tottenham etc but not so ideal for general touristy stuff, or places like Chelsea!

I'm tempted to wing it and just drive there and try to find a car park, but I'd either end up getting lost, or paying to park before realising it's absolutely no where near a tube station.

Thanks :)

Where are you driving in from? I think you can find car parks and stations on Google maps so that will help you plan in advance?

Gloucestershire, and yeah I did look on Google Maps, but the prices aren't stated so I imagine it could be anything from £1 a day (Hillingdon) to £20+ a day (a lot of NPC car parks). Thanks for the reply:)

(edit) is there a way to see car parks on route on Google Maps? Searching London car parks only shows very central ones

When I go to football, I park in the Chiswick area (J2 of M4) and then get the tube/train.
On-street parking is plentiful and mainly free at weekends and evenings.

Many suburban tube stations have free parking around them but only after 6.30 or at weekends. If you travel and want to park at other times there are few free options left but one on street option is near to West Action (Central Line). Incidentally you won't find Hillingdon at all convenient for Tottenham. It will be into London and out again.

Hillingdon is on the Piccadilly and Metropolitan lines. From there, all areas of London are accessible. Chelsea and the rest of London is only forty minutes away. Seeing as Hillingdon is on the A40, it's a direct route from Gloucester.

OP, do you want to go to Tottenham?

Many thanks for the replies again guys, love the idea of Chiswick and finding a place to park, or using the Tube station car parks above and hoping I can find a free one!

And nope, I certainly do not want to go to Tottenham! ;) It was just a recommendation from a friend who goes there a lot. I'll be mostly visiting central London (tourist!) but am also hoping to go to the occasional Chelsea game too, which isn't that far from the places I'm looking at anyways

    Thanks again!

that TFL link is amazing by the way, thank you! maximum of £1.50 on a Saturday?! does that also mean that I could pay the extra £1 and stay overnight? long shot I know...

i'm finding it all massively confusing though, not sure why - finding out which line I need to go on wasn't too bad at all, but the one line is a waste of time (one car park the other side of london) and the other is a list of obscure places that I'm struggling to find on Google Maps, especially not along my route...

still liking chiswick, although I maybe run the risk of getting fined for parking my car there!?

As far as I am aware, there are no free car parks at or near any tube stations. As far as Chiswick is concerned, forget it. The traffic etc., will make the journey quite difficult and unless you are used to driving London, your trip will less enjoyable. Parking is extremely limited, mostly short term (one or two hours and no return within one hour etc.) and resident permits only, even at weekends. You don't want to return form your day out to find your car has been clamped or towed away.

Standford Bridge is not as close to Chelsea as you might think, it's more Fulham Broadway than anything else. Tottenham is far from being a tourist centre, unless you're a Spurs fan of course, it is a typical edge of centre city area, mainly residential and not many attractions.

The alternative is, why don't you get the train from you home town?
