    Hello,

just trying to find out whether the Bosch I'm having delivered tomorrow is likely to come with a molded plug that I can't easily get off and back on while the delivery men are here (I need to feed the flex through holes in kitchen units to plug it in).

It may be a long shot, but I thought I'd ask. Molded plugs are a real bugbear of mine, and I don't know how widely they're used on appliances...I'm hoping for a plug I can quickly take off and put back on.

thanks if anyone can give me a clue on this (I know I'll know for sure tomorrow!)

I believe all new electrical appliances in the UK now come with moulded plugs as a safety precaution (to stop silly people like us wiring our plugs wrongly  ) You might need to nip out and buy a new plug to put onto the cut cable.
  • Some inside knowledge.
I deliver/install for a High St major, and also take away scraps or replace failed appliances under guarantee. The league table of most reliable is this;Miele,LG,Bosch,Hoover,Zanussi,Beko,Indesit, Hotpoint. Yep thats right, not what you'd expect, and this is a 3/4 year survey.
If you check the prices Bosch is the anomaly, as you get more reliability for price. Never returned a Miele in 3 years.
I'll probably get 3 next week, its like that!!

  • Oh and re the moulded plug thing, some manufacturers use cut off plugs to invalidate warranty, and some company installers wont do the work on those grounds. Much better to buy a 3" hole saw and put a route through the units to take the plug, cable and pipework if necessary. Hopefully your 3 pin socket and water taps aren't in proximity??

Thank you all - I made myself an extension lead with adaptor, plug and 15amp cable, all perfect, the installers seemed happy with it, and it runs through holes at the back of the units.

Bit of a review - So far very happy with the Bosch WAE24465 - £318.30 delivered and installed (Pixmania, delivered through Dixons/Currys Home on the fourth working day, with confirmation of delivery day two days earlier, and a four-hour delivery slot given the night before, and kept to). I particularly like the timer delay facility which enables me to time the wash to be ready when I get up and can hang it out to dry before work. I find it very quiet, too, and the 1200 spin speed gets clothes a LOT drier than my old whirlpool at 900 - so quicker to dry, and less condensation in the house in the Winter!

Miele and Siemens are generally regarded as the top brands. The middle brands are AEG, Zanussi and Bosch. If you go down the Beko or Service road you may be lucky but for the money difference (<£70 compared with Bosch) I am not sure it is worth the risk.

When I was considering buying a washing machine recently I really wanted to get the Miele but decided against it because I am not the kind of person that would be prepared to keep the same machine for 15 years to justify the price. Five or six years is my limit with any white goods because by then I have a great hankering for something new and different.

Taking that into account, I finally decided to go for the Bosch WAE24162 for £248 from Dixons. It is perfectly adequate for what I need it for. It washes well and I can leave it on overnight without being disturbed.
  • 4: Hotpoint have a 5 year parts guarantee (I think that bosch is only 1 or 2) so if something major goes wrong it can be fixed by HP but silly little niggles can be fixed cheaply independantly.
BEWARE! The 5 year parts guarantee. After the first year the parts are only replaced free if they are fitted by one of Hotpoints own engineers. They will charge you £89 which they will pester you into paying by credit card before theyll even come out. I am in dispute with them at the moment. They charged me £89 sent the enginineer out who didnt know how to fix the machine! but now wont give the money back:mad: Hotpoint/Indesit is one company I definately wouldnt reccomend for customer service.
