They obviosuly see where i live as being worthwhile(as in customers with money wanting to part with it) in opening up the old store they vacated 5 years ago to move to a larger unit at a new retail park0

The good old-fashioned electrical shop will be returning in no time, breathing new life into our town centres.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

currys wont be closing, like i said above nothing is definite yet, they may end up just closing some of the non profitable stores0 -
Well, if Comet is sold, whoever buys it had better look inside the box first in case some of the components are missing.......0

If they can, that is! Our town centre store was told their lease wasn't going to be renewed, and that as soon as the landlords found another tenant, they'd have 6 weeks to close. That was over a year ago!Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. More shops = more competition = Lower prices
Internet sites sell products for a cost that lets them make a very small profit, and pay their (small) overheads.
Physical stores have much larger overheads - they either price themselves out of the market, or make no profit / or even a loss to stay competitive.
If there isn't enough money to keep KESA (who have a massive buying power) here, who do you think will take their place? Dixons Retail don't have the cash to buy 200 stores, Best Buy are a joke, and no independent can take that on.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -

Point is, Currys, PCWorld (and Especially the nordic parts) are all profitable, Comet isn't.
So long as a company is profitable then it won't close/go into admin etc. If you think of any big business as a oil tanker, go back to 2007 when John Browlett took charge of the helm. DSGi looked in big trouble (and this was before the world wide meltdown), so he fired everyone on the board (backstab much?) brought a new team on board and went about slashing 12% of operating costs to streamline the business and renew the stores. There was a time, most people had no idea how close DSGi were to going into Administration/needed a bailout as the financial crisis hit. Just like a Oil Tanker needs a long time to reverse, its the same with rolling out large updates across a EU wide business.
If DSGi were going to be taken out of the market then it would of happened by now. I mean, if you look around at the traditional Electronic retailers, Best Buy have 9 stores and are struggling to find a format that works, Comet is talking about pulling out of the market, Argos is having a very terrible time. The only traditional electronic outlet which seems to be doing well is John Lewis.
I mean, look at the figures. In 2009 DSGI had a profit of MINUS 214 Million, on turnover of 8.23Billion, in 2010 they had a profit of 59.80Million on turnover of 8.53Billion. The turnover is flat, but the massive improvement is there. Big ship analogy complete. They also have a little over 100 Million in cash reserves.0 -
No, the town centres will become full of empty shops as even more people buy their stuff online.
It's not so much becoming full of empty shops as having every shop that does become empty filled with a chicken shack/chicken hut/chicken point/chicken express, hairdresser, charity shop, estate agent or nicky-nacky-noo shop.
In our town you can no longer buy:
Decorating supplies
Tools
Electronics
Stationery
Electrical components
And the only book shop is one that sells remainders.
Yet we have 9 charity shops, 10 estate agents a dozen nicky-nacky-noo shops. (We don't seem to have had the invasion of fast food outfits that others have.)There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0
