Beware-COMET could be cheating on the products they are selling..

Options
Last week, I had reserved a HP laptop online to be collected at my local COMET store. After I had picked it up, I started personalising the PC and to my surprise the hardware configuration on the laptop was not what the model should have had! It was a bit strange, the graphics card on the model should have been a 'ATI Mobility Radeon' (there was a sticker on the laptop showing this) but it was having a standard Intel (shared memory) graphics card. This model is a fairly high end one and the graphics card is a factor for the price.

So shocked with what I saw, I took it back to the store, none of the responsible people had answers for this! instead they promptly replaced it with a new piece which I had to scan completely whilst I was in store. I had spoken to HP about this and they strongly denied that anything of this nature can happen at their manfacturing end and have noted COMET has a retailer with lack of ownership.

To summarise, COMET tampers the products they sell without the respective manufacturer's knowledge! So please be careful when you are buying stuff ad make sure you check all details of the products you buy.

To summarise, the OP has either deep pockets or a very cheap lawyer to cope with the potential libel suit heading his way.

Is it not possible someone made an error somewhere ? And what exactly do you mean by "noted COMET has a retailer with lack of ownership." ?

How exactly can you "tamper with" a laptop and remove the graphics card? Do you have any idea how rediculous that statement is?

I'm suprised HP have never had such an issue with products before - they've recently started giving some of their computers different model numbers (but the same barcodes) and then mixing them up in the same shipment... nightmare to sort of what it actually is.

Are you sure the laptop didn't have hybrid graphics? Several high end laptops have a "basic" and "advanced" GPU it can swap between, depending on if it's being used or not.

If the model number on the box is the same model as you bought, then frankly Comet have done nothing wrong. You can't expect them to open _every_ product they buy, and inspect that all the hardware is in there (especially when you wouldn't be able to inspect the GPU without tuning it on first...)

Yes that is right my laptop has this feature too, however it didn't have the card it needed for the advanced switch over!! which is what shocked me and further more, when I took my laptop back to the store and compared the device properties against the display piece, the salesman was mouth shut and couldn't talk any further. How do you explain this?

The laptop box has only comet's seal and there is no HP seal anywhere outside. I have to say COMET does this intentionally and tries it with its selected customers to see if they can get it through...

Well, I'm not gaining anything here by criticising anybody, just felt that no one else should be affected like this. As you know not many of us who buy computers are all that hardware literate to check such things and by the time even if you become aware of it at some point it is probably too late.:)

More than likely the manufacturer put the wrong product in the right box. Do you honestly think that Comet would intentionally sell someone the wrong product, and hope they get away with this as a business model?

The £50 they'd save on "selected customers" laptops would be in no way worth the massive fine they'd get from trading standards, the absence of *any* sales once this practice became common knowledge.

To be honest, I'm not a bit surprised. It was so easy to shoplift from Comet, I'm amazed they ain't failed sooner.

    Is that a confession ?

The Benjamin Franklin who was born in America you mean ?

Comet closure.. Best news I've heard all day. Things are at last looking up for Great Britian plc. All we need now is for Nick Griffin to be knighted, arise Sir Nicholas, made the new P.M., and then we can go ahead and sweep the Olympic medal board! That would really show those wriggly French slugs who's boss!

    Seriously ????

With those two old hags ripped from the retail parks, you just watch the revival on the High Street.

If Comet leave the market, it's because theres no money in electricals. Nobody will take their place.
