    ARE CYCLISTS KILLING YOUR DAUGHTERS?

Some don't seem too far fetched though....

    :rotfl: No, actually. :p

Worryingly though I did find this on my news ticker a few months ago...

If you actually read down to the bottom one of the researchers basically says the headline cannot possibly be deduced.

The thing I find crazy is the number of cyclists in the wrong gear (NO, not Lycra) They are either in bottom with their pedals going round like a demented hamster wheel or in top struggling with the pedals and wobbling like mad. Can they just not get the hang of gear changing or has the derailleur broken and they can't fix it ? Back in my days your bike was your pride and joy and everyone knew just how to maintain and repair it.

Same used to go for cars too, but now we can't even change a spare wheel without calling the AA/RAC :(

Gears on bikes are just too complicated for some people these days.
Same as people who drive down the middle lane of the motorway.....

    Has anyone noticed this phenomenon?

I saw one rather oikish looking young man, wearing a tracksuit, smoking a fag while riding his bike (silly full-supsension toys rus type bike), thing that got me though was that his seat was so slow that when his pedals were at the bottom of their stroke, his knees were still at a 90 degree angle. Isn't it rather painful to cycle around like this?

I saw an older chap doing the same a bit later, but I thought perhaps he was doing it because he wanted to be able to put his feet on the ground easier....

    Maybe the bike wasn't his.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

I have to have the seat as low as it goes otherwise my feet want reach the ground.
    I'm only little.

Basically the saddle should be level with your hips. If your seat is right at the bottom it's generally cos you need a smaller frame. It's generally better to have a smaller bike with the saddle a bit higher than a big bike with the saddle at the bottom.

Your feet should always be able to touch the ground - just lean the bike to one side if that's the case.

Anyway, the saddle height itself is not the point so much as having your legs very nearly straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

It might of been one of bikes that you are meant to stand on , the kids use them for stunts and things.. they hardly use the seat at all .

Nah, those bikes look something like this: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/commencal/maxmax-atherton-2011-jump-bike-ec025972

This chap was on something like this:

If the saddle height is correct its quiet possible that the feet will not reach the ground. The rider then has to learn the correct way for mounting and dismouting a bicycle, i.e one foot on ground, one on pedal, push down on pedal and mount saddle.

Unfortunately most people don't mount bikes this way so the saddle is typically too low. In the past 6 months i've raised my saddle over 3 inches, making it more comfortable and increasing my average speed. I too had to learn how to mount a bike but it is pretty simple.

Well yes, but if you lean the bike over slightly you can touch the ground, even if you can't when it's upright.
