dezz99, you could have just went to the Post Office and got a rubbish rate there, saved yourself all the grief.
I expect you will be back here for your next break asking the same question, picking the easiest option instead of the best, in order to save yourself any hassle.
Thats the thing with stupid people, they keep repeating the same mistake over and over, instead of taking good advice.

does anybody do this commision free anymore?

    thanks

Everybody but everybody does it commission free.

It's the rates they compete (or don't compete) over

What's more, the OP specifically asked if their existing Nationwide card was still a better option than getting cash from the high street, was told that it probably was, and ignored that advice as well...
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

Nationwide is no good for overseas withdrawals any more.

Get a Metrobank debit card (London branches only) or a NPBS debit card via http://www.nandp.co.uk/current-account/ - these both have no overseas fees or loading.

For a credit card, the Halifax Clarity card is good - no fees/loading.

http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/ is a good site for locating the cheapest foreign cash before departing.

I work in a company with many European workers who are always wanting to swap euros for pounds. So we exchange directly using the mid-rate and avoid giving the banks any money.
