Pre pay funerals

Options
Any advice about these?

My mother has less than 10k to her name.
5k in an account of my elder sisters & 4k in her current account (which I have a card to).

A pre-pay funeral would use up most of the money in her current account (of which she has no further use).

Would it be a good idea?
Is there anything I should be wary of with them?

Hi Mrs E...one of the main advantage of a prepaid funeral is that it is not counted towards your savings when applying for pension credit and the like.
And with the Co-op you have the dividend and with Charter (presently) £40 M&S vouchers.
Maybe somewhere is a site doing cashback. Lots to think about, after all it's only an insurance policy, guaranteeing the funeral director his charges.

I don't know loads about funerals, so I'm not sure what it is we want.

If someone dies in a care home & wants to be cremated, then they go from the home to the funeral !!!!!!, then onto the crematorium?

    ETA not sure wshy it doesn't like p a r l o r

It's OK if you spell it right - parlour - but for some reason it doesn't like it spelt the American way.

If someone dies in a care home they are collected by a funeral director and taken to their premises. Care homes don't have facilities for keeping dead bodies until the cremation or burial.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Why doesn't your mother have no further use for her money?

My parents have bought pre-paid funerals. When they did it, means-tested claimants were only allowed £6k in savings and that would only have covered the two funerals. It didn't allow them to save up for any big expenditure, like work on the house or a stairlift. It also meant that after the death of the first one, the survivor's capital would have been much reduced, just when the household income also went down.

They spread the payment over two years and it also gave them the opportunity to think about what they would like to happen and how the services would be conducted.

    That's so sad.

She probably wouldn't be able to sign up for a pre-paid funeral as she has dementia but I can't see any benefit in doing it anyway.

The money she has in her account will be used to pay for the funeral when it's needed.

Could I not buy it on her behalf?

Its very sad. My m-i-l had a prepaid plan. I think it was a great thing to do, took the worry and pressure off when she died. The funeral was paid for, just a few decision to make is a good thing when you are already emotionally wraught.
