    Hitmanpro found a sniper in the long grass. Win32 Aleuron was residing in the boot sector. It resisted heavily but since reboot the machine seems to be settling again. Once into the machine (now Aleuron free) it works like a dream. Just one or two little niggles which I'll get to the bottom of easily now the rootkit has gone.

    The rootkit was hiding malware so it'll be worth doing all the scans again (Malwarebytes, Hitmanpro), run both of the rootkit scanners (aswMBR and tdsskiller), and a long one with something like Dr Web. You can set Dr Web to do a "complete scan" overnight. The risk is that the rootkit will have left behind components that'll just put it right back on again.

    I would also definitely run a HijackThis log, see what settings have been changed by it.

    I'm letting the system settle at the moment. You know how computers seem to suffer from shock when they've had a serious buffeting?

    Seems to have settled ok. Found another Trojan using MS Security Scan. Tried to reboot into Seagate Tools again this morning as well as sorting out other issues caused by the removal of the other malware but no joy so have downloaded the disctools you recommended and will be trying to boot into them tomorrow.

    Strangely the disc is performing ok now. Just won't do a soft boot.

    That's what I suspected myself. The disc seems to be running fine now from hard boot and I seem to have corrected all the issues which cropped up as a result of deleting files. Now I will try to get to the bottom of the softboot problem. Your help is much appreciated as this is an issue I haven't come across before.

    Russ I'm at an impasse. I have downloaded the tools you recommended and I've got UBCD extracted to my hard drive. I'm also going to burn a CD from the ISO. I've read through the documentation however and explored the extracted files and find myself bemused. It's more complicated than I'm used to. What would your recommendation be for running a disc test and/or repair on my Seagate Barracuda 500GB?

    This has me really scratching my head. I've tried to boot into UBCD this morning but can't because the keyboard will not work, even though it is lit and apparantly active. The disk is running like a dream and I'm more and more convinced this is either a MB firmware issue or a corrupt bios because:

    The computer will only boot up from cold, and I mean cold. It need to stand for at least 5 minutes before it will boot. I've checked the processor temperature and it's well within the correct parameters so it's not that.

    Another clue is that when the PC fails to boot there is no BIOS startup screen and the monitor reports "no signal input". There is also no HDD activity.

    So it's off to the AMD website now to flash the MB firmware and then see what happens. If it's not that, in my considered opinion, it can only be a corrupt bios.

    Curiouser and curiouser. Now have a corruption (apparantly) in NVIDIA so will try to resolve that from their website. In the meantime here is the HiJackThis log, just in case there's something I'm not seeing. Another pair of (more experienced) eyes might be the key.

    In that log in terms of maintenance there are startups you could consider disabling using MSconfig, e.g.

    I would uninstall Threatfire as unfortunately this product is no longer actively being developed - just maintained. Threatfire used to be an excellent program, but it's well out of date now. Just slows things down, and didn't stop you getting TDL3.

    You've still got leftovers from Rapport in there, can select the box next to this in HijackThis and select 'Fix checked':

    I would set all non Microsoft services to manual unless they really need to be automatic, such as AVG:
    1. Use MSCONFIG > Services, and Hide all Microsoft Services in order to easily to see what the non-Microsoft Services are.
    2. Find them in services.msc (Start > Run > Services.msc) double click on each and set the startup type to manual

    I didn't run TDSSKiller and aswMBR that I know of?

    I can't flash the bios as I've had extreme difficulty in tracking down the correct version. I managed to flash the chipset though.

    I don't recognise Threatfire. I've certainly never installed it standalone and it isn't on my program list. I was wonder about rapport though, I'll uninstall it now that I don't use live banking anymore.

    I'll run combofix and post a log and see what you make of it. Perhaps you would be kind enough to direct AlienRik's attention to it?

    I've seen this on several machines.....Russ' advice on running the removal tool is sound.. but run it at least twice, followed by both cleaner and registry elements of CCleaner - that should see it off :)
