Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Closed has a very good list of what to do: HOW TO SPEED UP A SLOW PC OR INFECTED PC. (a mini guide) - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums

    Start by Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50 - FileHippo.com
and Install. Go to UPDATE tab and click CHECK FOR UPDATES. Run a FULL SCAN. Remove anything it finds and post log here.

Then Download HijackThis 2.0.4 - FileHippo.com and install. Hit the top button of the program and post the log generated here.

Start by running "clean up disc" and then deleting any toolbars you have downloaded. Then do a disc defragment. If you don't know how to do these things come back on and I'll spell it out. Also, do you have any anti-spyware or malware detectors? Are you running Norton Security?

clean up disc or defrag is unlikely to make any difference, post a hijackthis log, and physical ram total and (if XP) commit charge figures from task manager, performance.

Then do a full scan with malwarebytes, fix anything found before closing

Keep it simple to start with. This could be an inexperienced user.

    What are you talking about?

Defragmenting greatly increases computer performance. Of course it'd help.

If it makes 0.05 % difference, I'd be surprised, complete waste of time on a modern pc

On multiple occasions where I defragmented I have had great increases in speed. If you can't notice it then your computer must be pretty fast already.

On a computer which is not regularly maintained by an experienced user it's always best to start with the basics.

You must have had well messed up disk to notice a great increase in speed. The basics are to scan for malware and look at what's running
