My slow computer is driving me mad

My computer's also running slow. AOL keep offering a frre trial of something called System Mechanic, which will cost £3.99 a month when the free trial expires.
Has anyone used this? Does it speed the computer up?0 -
Start a new thread as above with a hijackthis log and ram/commit charge figures, more software will probably make it worse, so no!!

Sorry...didn't mean to hijack!0

Anything it can do, you can do usually better with free software, and free advice here. There are a lot of complaints about System Mechanic causing problems, such as making Windows unbootable. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole (not that anyone would be likely to ask that of me).
If you start a new thread and post a hijackthis log, as well as do a quick scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then people will be more than happy to post some suggestions.
1. Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Then UPDATE it, followed by a QUICK scan (significantly faster than a FULL scan which can literally take 15 times longer, only worry about a Full scan if you find something on a Quick scan). Clean anything it finds, and post a log even if you don't find anything.
I'm going to give this a shot myself because I've got an Adbot somewhere on my PC and it's driving me crazy. Spywaredoctor is not finding it, even Symantec can't.0 -
How'd you go?
Found and removed two Trojans (one of which was WEEMI) that Spyware Doctor hadn't found. Also had a lot of entries for Mywebsearch which, although isn't harmful, I deleted anyway. The annoying thing is that, very occasionally, I'm still getting ads popping up. That's despite my pop-up blocker being set to its highest sensitivity, all cookies deleted, Spyware Doctor run umpteen times, now the Malwarebytes, Symantec Antivirus scan, AVG etc.
This disc has just come back from Seagate's facility in Amsterdam. The disc was bricked because of the known firmware fault. It's been flashed now and is working again but these adbots are cropping up as well as a strange fault which stops the PC doing a softboot and it needs a good 10 minute rest before it'll boot up on a hard boot. It's failed the Seagate SMART test on the Windows tool but I can't get the DOS Tool to work because I can't get it to see the keyboard in the bootup stage.
Now after all that imagine how bored I would be if I didn't have a PC?0 -

Do the popups occur outside of browsing? Feel free to post the Malwarebytes log in a new thread, also a hijackthis log if you want us to check over it for anything obvious. Wouldn't hurt for you to manually check your browser proxies. Other scans you may wish to run:
Hitman Pro: Second Opinion Malware Scanner (very quick! no install needed)
http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro
SuperAntiSpyware portable
http://www.superantispyware.com/sasportable.php
Avast Rootkit Scanner (quick)
http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm
Kapersky TDSSKiller (very quick)
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe
With the seagate tool, you could possibly try either UBCD4Win bootCD (which has HDtune), or UltimateBootCD which has the seagate UATA100 tool and maybe they might detect the keyboard - or can you not even get into bios?

I like the sound of hitmanpro so I'm running it now. I've also downloaded the seagate ghosting tool so that I can fit another hard drive and copy all to it. In the meantime I'll have fun messing about with this and seeing if I can fix it. BTW there's no log to publish for Malwarebytes, it has found and eliminated all it can.0 -
Following on from yesterday i have made a start, have uninstalled adaware and spybot but cant uninstall avg. I will start a new thread now and post why0
