Refused job application due to IVA

I'm so angry right now I could burst!

I just went to apply for a job as an analyst at Co-operative Financial and was told I could not apply as I did not meet their selection criteria as I have an IVA. Now bear in mind that I have all the relevant experience and skills to do the job (as it's the same job as I do now within the civil service) but much better money and the job is nothing to do with interaction with money but rather an analyst within the IT Change department. Oh, and co-op aren't even one of the institutions in my IVA.

I'm sorry - how does having an IVA prevent me from doing my job?

Just wondered if anyone had any experience with Employment laws as surely this is some sort of discrimination. What do they do with members of staff who get an IVA- sack them on the spot?

Sorry for venting but it's really infuriated me. Not sure where I stand with being able to appeal their decision.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

It is quite common for a financial institution to refuse a job to someone who is formally insolvent even if the job is not money facing
Hi, im Debtinfo, i am an ex insolvency examiner and over the years have personally dealt with thousands of bankruptcy cases.

One of the criteria is likely to be that you have to be a 'fit and proper person' to undertake the role as it is a financial institution. However, being formally insolvent is a big no no in the fit and proper person stakes unfortunately.

I suppose it would be similar to a person with a criminal record being refused a job by the police even if they were only doing admin work.

When I rejoined the civil service ( I work within Defence) I had to have restrictions on my security clearance due to my financial situation. Even though I wasn't included on the IVA!

It does seem a bit backwards but I was seen as a risk and open to bribes etc - - however you would think after many years clean service they would over look it.

i feel your pain, i have been dupped into an IVA and the promises of it not ruining your chances for a job are pathetic and an absolute joke. i too have gone for analyst roles, and have been rejected purely because im on an IVA, i wish id gone bankrupt, doesnt seem to be doing me any favours right now.

I agree it's a disgrace. At least those in IVA's are actually doing something about the debt. I wonder how many employees are drowning in debt and are a far greater risk had the employer known about it ??? Come to think of it, I guess we all were pre-IVA !!

Southpaw --- BR would have given you the same ( if not more) problems, I am afraid.
  • Unfortunately, that is how many organisations work nowadays. It use to be the domain of the financial institution, but now a lot of "normal" companies do it as well.
People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks. Years later, a doctor will tell me that I have an I.Q. of 48 and am what some people call mentally !!!!!!.

I had an interview with a recruitment agency for a number of roles, not even remotely related to financial services. All was going swimmingly for a couple of roles they were keen to put me forward for. Just a simple agency form to complete at the end of the meeting and the last question asked about financial history including BR and IVA. As soon as the agent saw my positive answer, everything changed. Interview was rapidly brought to a close and nothing more heard. My emails and phonecalls went ignored. It was a harsh reality check.

it shouldnt be allowed to be turned down for a job if you have iva out standing or finished you are paying your debt off through the iva or you have finished it should mean your credit is being repaired either way  its finical discrimination they dont tell us it will affect the job prospects when you take it on
